Cricket coach in Kerala sentenced to 35 years of rigorous imprisonment in sexual abuse case

This image is used for representational purposes only. | Photo Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto The Thiruvananthapuram Fast Track Special Court Special Judge, Anju Meera Birla, has sentenced Manu M., a 40-year-old cricket coach, to 35 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹66,000 on him for sexually assaulting a female student. He will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of six years and nine months if he defaults on the fine payment. While the verdict pertains to the second sexual abuse case registered against him, the court also found the coach guilty in a third case under similar circumstances. The sentence in the case will be pronounced on Saturday (June 27, 2026). Six cases were registered against the accused in all. The trials for four of the cases have been completed. The judgment states that the sentence for the second case will commence only after the completion of the prison term in the first case. The prosecution, led by special public prosecutor R.S. Ramakrishnan was an astrologer from Managiri in Sivaganga district. In November 2021, a woman who consulted him mentioned that her two daughters, aged 17 and 14, were not performing well in their studies. Ramakrishnan claimed that performing a remedy would help the girls study better. Believing him, the woman took her daughters to his house. He then asked the mother to stay in one room and took the girls to another under the pretext of performing the ritual. He sexually assaulted the minors and threatened that their parents would die if they reported the incident. Out of fear, the girls did not disclose it at the time. Two years later, both girls fell ill. Hospital tests revealed that they had contracted a sexually transmitted disease (STD). A CBI court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday sentenced former Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) inspector Anil Kumar Sharma and advocate Amit Kotak to two years’ rigorous imprisonment, and imposed a total fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on them in a 2009 bribery case. The two were booked on January 15, 2009, following allegations that Sharma, then a recovery inspector, and Kotak, a DRT lawyer, had demanded illegal gratification of Rs 3.5 lakh from the complainant. The bribe was allegedly sought to settle an auction-related issue involving three properties and to defer the execution of an already auctioned property belonging to the complainant’s cousin. According to a CBI statement, Sharma had demanded that Rs 1 lakh be paid initially, with the remaining Rs 2.5 lakh to be paid later. Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught Kotak red-handed while accepting Rs 1 lakh from the complainant.
