USA-Australia’s bruising rivalry reaches the FIFA World Cup

USA-Australia’s bruising rivalry reaches the FIFA World Cup

5 min readUpdated: Jun 19, 2026 08:24 AM IST If you want to understand the modern soul of American and Australian sports, do not look to the football pitch. Look to a swimming pool in Sydney, 26 years ago. It was the 2000 Olympics, and the American men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team had spent weeks bragging that they would smash the Australians “like guitars”. Instead, an electric, home-crowd-fuelled Aussie quartet touched the wall first, broke the world record, and stood on the blocks mock-strumming furious air guitars right back at their shell-shocked rivals. For decades, this has been the operational reality of the USA-Australia sporting relationship. An elite, hyper-athletic feud masked as a sibling rivalry. They have traded body blows on Olympic athletics tracks, fought on basketball courts, and stared each other down from opposite ends of tennis nets. Two nations built on the identical, uncompromising belief that they are, athletically and culturally, the ultimate sporting powerhouse. Yet for the longest time, football was exempted from this cultural war. It was a secondary sport in …

Gukesh-Sindarov rivalry heats up in Poland with revenge win for Uzbek star in Grand Chess Tour

4 min readNew DelhiUpdated: May 8, 2026 11:51 PM IST Chess is often seen as a sport of quiet calculation, where emotion is expected to take a back seat to cold logic. But there is always room for a posture and a few gestures carry as much weight as the fist pump. When world champion D. Gukesh defeated his challenger Javokhir Sindarov in a rapid game at the Super Rapid and Blitz tournament in Poland, his celebration was far from subtle. And for those watching closely, it spoke volumes. It was as if Gukesh was reminding who holds the crown. That was Day 2. On Day 4, the Uzbek prodigy – the same one who has taken the chess world by storm with a World Cup triumph followed by a Candidates victory – struck back. Sindarov had his revenge, defeating Gukesh in the blitz portion of the event to even the score right away. It was a day of extremes for Gukesh. From nine rounds of blitz, he walked away with just four points through …

Timberwolves and Nuggets rivalry returns for a third showdown in four postseasons

DENVER — The main actors remain the same for Minnesota-Denver, Part III. The plot line is similar, too. HT Image “But a totally different movie,” Nuggets coach David Adelman said. Grab the popcorn and recline back because the headliners always seem to put on a show. The series between the Timberwolves and Nuggets, featuring Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, becomes the third installment over the last four postseasons. Each team has won a series. “I don’t think there’s anything else to call it but a rivalry,” Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards said of a first-round matchup that kicks off Saturday. It certainly checks all the boxes to place that rivalry label on it: Close games . Close proximity . Close relationships . “It’s weird to shake their hands after the series, because you know those guys so well,” Adelman said. The Nuggets won in five games over the Timberwolves in 2023 on their march to the franchise’s first NBA title. A year later, the Wolves erased a 20-point deficit in Game 7 …

Why Javokhir Sindarov vs Praggnanandhaa is the rivalry that defines this era just as much as Gukesh vs Nodirbek

Why Javokhir Sindarov vs Praggnanandhaa is the rivalry that defines this era just as much as Gukesh vs Nodirbek

4 min readApr 10, 2026 12:14 AM IST On the happiest day of his fledgling career, moments after he had won the FIDE World Cup in Goa to secure a spot in the Candidates tournament, when Javokhir Sindarov was asked if there was a particular opponent he was looking forward to facing in Cyprus, the grinning Uzbek had hand-picked a boy who is his contemporary: India’s R Praggnanandhaa. Sindarov’s reasoning for picking the Indian prodigy was simple. They have a long history of locking antlers since they were seven-year-olds. “I played him for the first time back in 2013. Even at that age — I was just sevenc– I knew he would become one of the top players in the world…” said Sindarov, “…because he beat me.” Sindarov had gone on to predict a couple of “very interesting matches” against Pragg at the Candidates in Cyprus. The Uzbek prodigy has more than delivered on that prophecy, beating the Indian twice in their two head-to-head battles at this edition of the Candidates tournament. A defeat for …

Candidates 2026: R Praggnanandhaa goes down to Javokhir Sindarov in latest installment of India-Uzbekistan chess rivalry | Chess News

It was never meant to be just about two individuals when R Praggnanandhaa and Javokhir Sindarov sat down across the board in the third round of the 2026 Candidates Tournament in Cyprus. Their duel was the latest installment of the India-Uzbekistan rivalry that has come to define a new era in chess, and this time it was Sindarov who emerged victorious, handing Pragg a painful loss. The two nations have spent the better part of half a decade establishing themselves as the rising powerhouses in the game. Their young talents keep clashing at every major event. At the last two Olympiads, it was Nodirbek Abdusattorov vs D Gukesh. In the Candidates, it’s Praggnanandhaa and Sindarov. The foundation of the dynamic was laid two decades ago by two former world champions, Viswanathan Anand and Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Their rivalry ignited in the early 2000s. Anand beat Kasimdzhanov to claim the 2002 World Cup in Hyderabad. The Uzbek returned the favour at the 2005 World Championship before Anand packed another punch. Then, in that very same year, Kasimdzhanov …

Why the Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner one-dimensional rivalry needs Daniil Medvedev to be firing on all guns | Tennis News

6 min readMar 16, 2026 07:41 PM IST A renaissance in the sultry heat of the Californian desert was put to bed by the cold ruthlessness of Jannik Sinner in Indian Wells on Sunday. The World No. 2 was himself going through a streaky start to the year before putting together the perfect tournament – winning six matches without dropping a set – to win the Indian Wells Masters, complete with a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) victory in the final. That result only took the shine off, and did not take the significance away from the 2026 resurgence of Daniil Medvedev. The big results of the year so far only reinforce the fears harboured at the start of the season; of the establishment of a new duopoly in men’s tennis that had gone unchallenged recently. Carlos Alcaraz was peerless in Melbourne to lift the Australian Open and become the youngest-player to complete the Grand Slam. His rival, Sinner, dusted himself off to rout the competition and win at Indian Wells. But the tennis that took …
