U2, Charli XCX and Robbie Williams honoured at Ivor songwriting awards

By Marie-Louise Gumuchian U2, Charli XCX and Robbie Williams honoured at Ivor songwriting awards LONDON, – Singers Charli XCX, Robbie Williams, Myles Smith and rapper Berwyn triumphed on Thursday at the Ivors, Britain’s annual awards for songwriters and screen composers, with Irish rockers U2 adding to their honours with a fellowship. U2 members Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. follow Paul McCartney, Sting, Kate Bush and Bruce Springsteen in receiving an Ivors Academy Fellowship, the highest honour bestowed by the UK-based association. They are the first Irish songwriters to do so. “When we gathered in Larry Mullen’s kitchen in 1976, this was unimaginable – we never thought that the band could be this old,” Clayton said on stage. “We had the most basic of talents but we believed that songs could take us anywhere because we’d already been to so many places, we just had to tell our story.” At the ceremony in London, Charli XCX was named songwriter of the year in recognition of her hit album “Brat,” which inspired a …

Movie Review: Robbie Williams has always lived to entertain. In ‘Better Man,’ he’s still doing it | Bollywood

“I came out of the womb with jazz hands,” pop star Robbie Williams recounts in “Better Man,” his new biopic. “Which was very painful for my mum.” Movie Review: Robbie Williams has always lived to entertain. In ‘Better Man,’ he’s still doing it Badum Dum. But also: Wow. What an image, to illustrate a man who, we learn, agonized from early childhood as to whether he had “it” — the star quality that could make him famous. Turns out, he did. Williams became the hugest of stars in his native Britain, making 14 No. 1 singles and performing to screaming crowds And whatever else we learn from director Michael Gracey’s brassy, audacious and sometimes utterly bonkers biopic, the key is that Williams’ need to entertain was primal – so primal that it triumphed over self-doubt, depression and addiction. It should surprise nobody, then, that this film, produced and narrated by Williams , is above all entertaining. But wait, you may be saying: Five paragraphs in, and you haven’t mentioned the monkey? Good point. The central …

Robbie Williams Reveals Why He’s Depicted As A ‘Cheeky Monkey’ In Biopic Better Man

Robbie Williams, one of the UK’s most celebrated entertainers, is set to share his life story in an unconventional way. In Better Man, a musical biopic directed by Michael Gracey, Williams is portrayed as a CGI chimpanzee rather than through a traditional human portrayal. The film, starring Jonno Davies as Williams’ animated avatar, premieres in theaters on December 25. Williams explained the choice by saying, “My MO has been cheeky. What’s cheekier than a cheeky monkey?” He told the Associated Press, “I’ve been a cheeky monkey all my life. There’s no cheekier monkey than the coke-snorting, sex-addict monkey that we see in the movie.” The decision to depict Williams as a chimpanzee was not made solely for humor or novelty. According to Williams, this creative choice helps audiences connect with the underlying humanity of his story. He explained that people often care more for animals than they care for humans. “It’s very much a human story, but if you’re watching it and someone’s playing Robbie Williams, you’re thinking: Does he look like him? Does he …

Robbie Williams hopes ‘Better Man’ film will help viewers heal | Hollywood

By Hanna Rantala Robbie Williams hopes ‘Better Man’ film will help viewers heal LONDON, – British singer-songwriter Robbie Williams’ turbulent life story served as inspiration for the musical movie “Better Man”, in which the pop star is portrayed as a CGI monkey. The semi-autobiographical drama follows Williams’ journey from childhood to global stardom. The “Angels” and “Rock DJ” musician, whose biggest hits are incorporated in the movie, lends his voice to the main character. Attending the film’s premiere in London on Wednesday, Williams, who was also the subject of a Netflix documentary last year, said sharing his story came easy. “I never stop opening up about my past. It’s how I socialise. You tell me about your childhood trauma, I tell you about my childhood trauma, and we get along. It’s par for the course for me,” Williams, who turned 50 in February, said. “Music heals, entertainment heals. And I hope that in some way this film is a healing process for people. I know it’s a lofty ambition and some people at home could …
