IIT Jammu, IIT Jodhpur launch new interdisciplinary programmes for 2026-27

3 min readNew DelhiJun 9, 2026 01:55 PM IST The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu has introduced a new BTech programme called Unified Engineering, designed for students who want to move beyond conventional single-discipline engineering pathways. The programme is open to JEE Advanced aspirants and offers a fully redesigned, hands-on curriculum that integrates multiple engineering domains. For more information, candidates can visit the official portal of IIT Jammu at iitjammu.ac.in. The programme emerges from a recognition that the lines between mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering are increasingly blurring as technology evolves. Rather than confining students to isolated departments, Unified Engineering is structured to help them connect ideas across disciplines and apply them to complex, real-world problems. For more information on the JoSAA counselling, students can visit the IE Education Portal. The curriculum is built around a Grand Challenge framework that emphasises teamwork, innovation, and real-world impact over traditional rote learning. Students will gain expertise in transformative domains including Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent Systems, Robotics, Smart Mobility, Electric Vehicles, and Sustainable Energy Technologies. Generative AI tools …

Amazon’s New Vulcan Robots for Fulfilment Centres Have a ‘Sense of Touch’

Amazon’s New Vulcan Robots for Fulfilment Centres Have a ‘Sense of Touch’

Amazon introduced a new warehouse-focused robot last week that can carefully manipulate a wide range of objects. Dubbed Vulcan, the new class of robots feature force feedback sensors that allow it to understand the amount of force it is applying while picking an object or pushing a cart. These robots will be used in the tech giant’s fulfilment centres globally and are designed to assist the human workers. Amazon said that these robots have created hundreds of new categories of human jobs at the warehouses. Amazon’s Vulcan Robots Come Close to Human Dexterity In a newsroom post, the Seattle-based tech giant introduced Vulcan and highlighted its capabilities. The new robots solve a critical problem in automating Amazon’s fulfilment centres – robots are numb and dumb. “In the past, when industrial robots have unexpected contact, they either emergency stop or smash through that contact. They often don’t even know they have hit something because they cannot sense it,” said Aaron Parness, Director, Applied Science, Amazon. The company highlighted that Vulcan, which is built using advances in …

IIT Kanpur Sets Up New AI School With Wadhwani Foundation Backing

IIT Kanpur Sets Up New AI School With Wadhwani Foundation Backing

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has collaborated with the Wadhwani Foundation to launch a School of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems. During a launch event held in New Delhi, the collaboration was formalized through a MoU signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi (MoU). The new school is expected to act as a superhub in Wadhwani Innovation Network. WSAI will host a newly established department with five early research centers and intelligent systems, offering student, doctoral and doctoral programs starting in 2026. Professor Manindra Aggarwal, director of IIT Kanpur, emphasized the institute’s intelligent system and the ongoing work in cyber security. “This support will increase our efforts to create an ecosystem that not only carries research boundaries, but also practical solutions,” he said. The school will also focus on commercialization of research results by joining the industry partners and enabling start -up initiatives. Story continues below this ad Apart from the IIT Kanpur initiative, a similar collaboration was announced in the same programme with IIT Bombay and Ausandhan National Research Foundation …

Nvidia Releases Cosmos-Transfer1 AI Model That Can Be Used for Simulation-Based Training for Robots

Nvidia Releases Cosmos-Transfer1 AI Model That Can Be Used for Simulation-Based Training for Robots

Nvidia released a new artificial intelligence (AI) model last week that can be used to train robots on simulation. Dubbed Cosmos-Transfer 1, the new world generation large language model (LLM) is aimed at AI-powered robotics hardware, also known as physical AI. The company has released the model in open source with a permissive licence, and interested individuals can download it from popular online repositories. The Santa Clara-based tech giant highlighted that the main advantage of the latest AI model is that users will have granular control over the generated simulations. Nvidia Releases AI Model to Train Robots Simulation-based robotics training has gained wind in recent times due to the advancement in generative AI technology. This specific branch of robotics deals with hardware that uses an AI for its brain. Essentially, the training method trains the brain of the machine in various real-world scenarios so that it can handle a wider range of tasks. This is a big improvement compared to current robots in factories that are designed to complete a single task. Nvidia’s Cosmos-Transfer1 is …

Google DeepMind Unveils Gemini Robotics AI Models That Can Control Robots in the Real World

Google DeepMind Unveils Gemini Robotics AI Models That Can Control Robots in the Real World

Google DeepMind unveiled two new artificial intelligence (AI) models on Thursday, which can control robots to make them perform a wide range of tasks in real-world environments. Dubbed Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER (embodied reasoning), these are advanced vision language models capable of displaying spatial intelligence and performing actions. The Mountain View-based tech giant also revealed that it is partnering with Apptronik to build Gemini 2.0-powered humanoid robots. The company is also testing these models to evaluate them further, and understand how to make them better. Google DeepMind Unveils Gemini Robotics AI Models In a blog post, DeepMind detailed the new AI models for robots. Carolina Parada, the Senior Director and Head of Robotics at Google DeepMind, said that for AI to be helpful to people in the physical world, they would have to demonstrate “embodied” reasoning — the ability to interact and understand the physical world and perform actions to complete tasks. Gemini Robotics, the first of the two AI models, is an advanced vision-language-action (VLA) model which was built using the Gemini 2.0 …

Apple Exploring Humanoid and Non-Humanoid Robots, Mass Production Could Start in 2028: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple Exploring Humanoid and Non-Humanoid Robots, Mass Production Could Start in 2028: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is exploring robots to add to its future smart home ecosystem, according to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The Cupertino-based tech giant is said to be looking at both humanoid and non-humanoid form factors. The roadmap is currently said to have reached the proof-of-concept stage, and mass production is unlikely to begin before 2028. However, it appears that the iPhone maker is seriously considering entering the robotics space, and looks at it as a sensor-based software-focused technology. Recently, the company published a paper on the ELEGNT framework that can allow non-humanoid robots to express their intentions via movements. Apple Could Enter the Robotics Space in 2028 In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Kuo claimed that Apple could expand its smart home ecosystem with humanoid and non-humanoid robots. Interestingly, Apple is not concerned over which form factor is more useful, and instead focuses more on how users build perception with robots, Kuo claimed. Notably, the tech giant does not use the term “humanoid” to refer to robots that resemble humans, and instead …
