Hyperloop pods, electric racing cars, mini rockets: this IIT Madras tech and innovation expo has it all

This racing car can go from 0 to 100 km per hour in 3.9 seconds! It runs on electric power and has been built completely by students at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. Members of team Raftaar Formula Racing presented the prototype of their car at the IIT Madras’ flagship innovation and start up expo, Delta Expo 2026, which began on Saturday. The car weighs 200 kg, much lighter than a combustible engine vehicle of same specifications and can reach up to a speed of 130 km/hour. The team was working on fitting sensors to the car to be able to operate it without the driver, said M. Reza, team head and third year Chemical Engineering student. The team would soon be entering an international competition for this line of vehicles in Germany, said Adithya Muthukumaran, co-team leader and third year student of B.Tech in Metallurgy. Team Abhyuday had an interesting prototype – a rocket that uses paraffin wax as solid fuel and nitrous oxide as the oxidiser to propel it to a distance …

Why Honda is suddenly launching reusable rockets

Why Honda is suddenly launching reusable rockets

In June of this year, Honda launched and landed a prototype, 20-foot-long reusable rocket at its research facility in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Though the company is known mainly as an innovative and iterative carmaker, it is also a transportation conglomerate, having developed and produced motorcycles, scooters, e-bikes, ATVs, boat motors, and even jets. Its skunkworks R&D center built the world’s first in-car navigation system, the first mass-produced automatic braking system, and the first production Level-3 autonomous driving system. Still, aiming toward the stars and potentially launching a competitor to Elon Musk’s SpaceX seemed to stretch beyond even Honda’s wildly diversified capabilities. Yet according to Kazuo Sakurahara — a former director of Honda’s Formula One racing team who now runs the company’s space development strategy — it is a logical move. “Honda products have already expanded across land, sea, and sky,” Sakurahara says, from Honda’s R&D facility north of Tokyo, in his first conversation with the American press. “So, it is not surprising that space is the next field of opportunity.” “Honda products have already …

Hamas fires rockets at Israeli cities | World News

Palestinian militant group Hamas said it fired a barrage of rockets at cities in Israel’s south on Sunday in response to Israeli “massacres” of civilians in Gaza. Israel’s military said about ten projectiles were fired, but most successfully intercepted. Israel’s Channel 12 reported a direct hit in the southern city of Ashkelon. Israeli emergency services said they were treating one person for shrapnel injuries and teams were en route to locations of fallen rockets. Smashed car windows and debris lay strewn on a city street, videos disseminated by Israeli emergency services showed. Story continues below this ad The first phase of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into force on January 19 after 15 months of war and involved a halt to fighting, the release of some of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas, and the freeing of some Palestinian prisoners. NASA to Launch Three Rockets in Alaska to Study Auroral Substorms’ Impact

NASA to Launch Three Rockets in Alaska to Study Auroral Substorms’ Impact

An important mission is set to take place in Alaska. It aims to understand how auroral substorms impact the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Three rockets will be launched within a short window to observe the movement of air and changes in composition at high altitudes. Scientists seek to determine whether the heat from auroras causes vertical movement or if waves spread the energy across a wider area. The findings could improve space weather forecasting, which is crucial for satellites and communication systems. Study Objective and Launch Plan According to the reports from the experiment titled Auroral Waves Excited by Substorm Onset Magnetic Events (AWESOME), the rockets will be launched from Poker Flat Research Range. The facility, located 20 miles north of Fairbanks, is managed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks under a NASA contract. The launch window is open from 24 March to April 6. A four-stage rocket and two two-stage rockets will be used. The first two will release tracers at specific altitudes to study wind movement. The third rocket will release vapour tracers at …

Pulsar Fusion’s Nuclear Fusion Rockets May Revolutionise Space Travel

Pulsar Fusion’s Nuclear Fusion Rockets May Revolutionise Space Travel

A UK-based company has announced plans for nuclear fusion-powered rockets that could reduce travel time across the solar system. Pulsar Fusion has been working on the project in secrecy for a decade and recently introduced the concept at the Space-Comm Expo in London. The company aims to test the technology this year and conduct an orbital demonstration by 2027. The rockets, called Sunbirds, are designed to propel spacecraft at high speeds using nuclear fusion. Experts believe that if the technology works, it could transform space exploration. However, some remain sceptical about its feasibility. Technology Behind the Sunbird Rockets As reported, the rockets will use a Duel Direct Fusion Drive (DDFD) engine. This system is designed to generate thrust by fusing deuterium and helium-3. Unlike conventional fusion reactors, the DDFD would produce charged particles that could be directly used for propulsion. The company claims that this technology could cut the journey to Mars in half and reduce the travel time to Pluto to just four years. However, the fusion process has not yet been successfully tested …
