Since the success of KGF, RRR, and Pushpa, there has been talk of Bollywood losing its mojo, while films from the South seem to know what audiences want. It had resulted in everything from passionate debates to proclamations about the Hindi film industry only making films for ‘Bandra and Juhu’. Writer Rohan Shankar is having a relaxing year after a hectic 2025 on the sets of Priyadarshan’s Bhooth Bangla and Haiwaan. “It was a lot of travel and constant movement,” he tells Hindustan Times in a chat. “2026 has been quite the opposite, in a good way. When Filmfare asked which character was the most challenging to write, Rohan said it was Saif Ali Khan’s. He revealed, “I think Saif sir’s character was very challenging. He is one of the main characters. He has a lot of personality traits, so it was little challenging. We wanted the lingo to be right. We had to put in certain words as per his character. Also, his character is a visually impaired person. So we had to remember that he couldn’t see. He won’t be able to tell what is happening. We had to write certain scenes in accordance to that.” He further added, “We had to add sounds, write in things that would create sounds, so his character could understand. At 29, writer-director Rohan Apte has cemented a film language about netherworlds and fantasy like he was always a fan of the horror genre. “More than horror I think it is a fascination for other worlds and objects that represent emotions and histories,” says Apte, about his short but assured oeuvre of two short films — Maya, in which a magical drink propels destinies and behaviours; and his new film, Varas, which gets its India premiere at the Wench Film Festival, the country’s leading film festival for horror and genre films, in Mumbai on February 28. A still from the short movie Varas Varas is an intriguing combination of horror and social commentary. Think of Apte’s language as an inspired re-channeling of the Roman Polanski classic Rosemary’s Baby (1968) and Rahi Anil Barve’s period folk horror masterpiece Tumbbad (2018).
