Train services in Punjab were affected as farmers squatted on rail tracks on Wednesday as part of their three-hour `rail roko` protest to press the Centre into accepting their various demands, including a legally binding minimum support price for crops. The call for the `rail roko` was given by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said farmers have been squatting on rail tracks at many places from 12 noon to 3 pm. “We are demanding a legal guarantee for MSP from the government,” a protesting farmer said. According to farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, the protests, organised by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, would begin at 12 pm and end at 3 pm in 23 districts spanning across the state. Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces. Farmers on Sunday staged agitations by blocking trains in railway stations across Tamil Nadu as a mark of solidarity with ryots of northern regions and demanding that the Centre fulfill assurances made on issues including Minimum Support Price. `Rail roko` protest: Train movement hit in Punjab as farmers squat on tracks

Movement of several trains was affected in Punjab on Sunday after agitating farmers squatted on tracks at many places in the state as part of a nationwide `rail roko` protest. The protest, called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha to press the Centre to accept their demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP), was held from 12 noon till 4 pm. In Punjab, farmers sat on railway tracks at many locations in 22 districts, including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Firozpur, Fazilka, Sangrur, Mansa, Moga and Bathinda. Because of the disruption of train services, passengers experienced inconvenience. According to railway authorities, nine trains including Ferozepur to Bathinda, Jalandhar City to Hoshiarpur, and Jalandhar City to Pathankot were cancelled and many trains were either short-terminated or short-originated.
