Karnataka rolls out India’s first alcohol-in-beverage liquor tax system

Karnataka rolls out India’s first alcohol-in-beverage liquor tax system

Karnataka introduced an Alcohol-in-Beverage (AIB)-based excise duty system, replacing its earlier bulk litre-based taxation model in what the state government described as the first such reform in India, which came into force on May 11. A salesman arranges liquor bottles inside a liquor store in Bengaluru, India. (REUTERS) It is intended to align liquor prices in Karnataka with those in neighbouring states while restructuring taxes according to alcohol content. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Karnataka excise department said the move followed chief minister Siddaramaiah’s 2026-27 budget announcement and was aimed at rationalising liquor pricing and making alcoholic beverages available at comparatively lower prices. “For the first time in India, the AIB-based excise duty structure has been implemented in Karnataka from May 11, 2026. It is globally recognised as the gold standard for alcohol taxation,” the department said. The revised framework removes government-administered price fixation and allows producers to position products within pricing slabs based on market considerations and alcohol content. According to the government notification issued on May 8, the number of Indian …

Kishan Reddy on Sunday (May 17, 2026), asserted that the names of Rohingya or Bangladeshi nationals must be removed from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise initiated by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Telangana. “I state this categorically: if the name of any individual who is not an Indian citizen appears on the voter list, authorities must verify and remove it,” he said and stated the BJP’s Booth Level Agents (BLAs) would fully cooperate with election officials in the process, hence other parties too should follow suit. Addressing a press conference at the party’s State office, Mr. Reddy said no attempts to obstruct the EC’s work would be tolerated and also cautioned against any effort to intimidate government officials. “My appeal to citizens is to participate in the SIR and extend full cooperation,” he said. Raja Shivaji Box Office Collections: Riteish Deshmukh starrer rolls on with Rs. 25 Cr in two days in India

Raja Shivaji Box Office Collections: Riteish Deshmukh starrer rolls on with Rs. 25 Cr in two days in India

Raja Shivaji collected Rs. 12.25 crore approx on its second day at the Indian box office. Of this, the original Marathi version accounted for Rs. 8.25 crore approx, while Rs. 4 crore approx came from the Hindi version. The two-day cumulative box office collections stand at Rs. 25.25 crore approx, with Marathi and Hindi splits of Rs. 17.25 crore approx and Rs. 8 crore approx, respectively. The second day hold was excellent, with a mere 5 per cent drop from the Holiday opening day. Given the holiday, the drop could have been much higher at around 30-40 per cent, but the fact that it was basically flat on its first day bodes very well for its full run. The drop was mainly in Maharashtra, while the rest of India was flat or saw some growth. The two-day collections in Maharashtra state are Rs. 19 crore approx.  The initial box office is far ahead of anything Marathi cinema has ever seen, which makes sense because this is the biggest Marathi film of all time in terms of …
