Alireza Firouzja will play at Norway Chess, five days after Romania event pull-out with injury

4 min readOsloUpdated: May 24, 2026 09:39 PM IST After on-the-bed chess last week in Romania, Alireza Firouzja will be offered the option of playing chess while being seated on a wheelchair this week in Norway. There was some uncertainty about Alireza’s participation at this year’s Norway Chess — due to his ankle injury which forced him to pull out of the Super Chess Classic Romania. But on Sunday, the tournament’s organisers confirmed to The Indian Express that the 22-year-old will play at the two-week-long event starting on Monday at Oslo. Norway Chess’ social media handle posted a video of Alireza, R Praggnanandhaa, Vincent Keymer, Javokhir Sindarov and Wesley So flying together from Bucharest to Oslo on Sunday where the Frenchman can be seen being wheeled into his hotel by Norway Chess staff. The organisers are yet to work out the finer details of what tweaks they might have to make to provide Alireza a comfortable experience. For now, they have kept a wheelchair at hand in case the player needs to use it. One …

Praggnanandhaa ends tied-fifth at Romania classical event; Vincent Keymer wins

2 min readMay 24, 2026 08:07 AM IST German grandmaster Vincent Keymer clinched the Super Chess Classic Romania 2026 tournament with a final round victory over Jorden van Foreest on Saturday. Keymer’s win was the only decisive game of the final round at Bucharest, but it ended up being a tournament deciding result on a day where five players had a chance to win the title. R Praggnanandhaa, India’s only contender in the tournament, ended joint-fifth, along with four other players. Praggnanandhaa’s only victory in the nine rounds he played in the tournament came against world championship contender Javokhir Sindarov while the Indian prodigy had lost in the seventh round to Fabiano Caruana. Pragg will now fly to Oslo to compete in the Norway Chess tournament, where he will be pitted against world champion D Gukesh, world no 1 Magnus Carlsen, Keymer, Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja. The Norway Chess tournament starts from Monday. On Saturday, Praggnanandhaa played out a 31-move draw against Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri. Both players were not in contention to claim …

Praggnanandhaa suffers first defeat at Romania; Sindarov wins first time | Chess News

3 min readUpdated: May 22, 2026 12:29 AM IST India’s R Praggnanandhaa slumped to his first defeat of the Super Chess Classic Romania tournament at Bucharest on Thursday, losing to Fabiano Caruana in 33 moves with white pieces in a round 7 encounter. Coincidentally, while Pragg suffered his first loss of the tournament, his contemporary from Uzbekistan Javokhir Sindarov experienced his first victory, defeating tournament leader Vincent Keymer. In a game that began with a Queen’s Gambit Declined on the board, Praggnanandhaa was in trouble from as early as the 25th move against Caruana after a shuffle of the queen from c2 to e2 saw the evaluation bar drop and indicate a hefty advantage to the American grandmaster. Another move of his rook on the back rank from e1 to c1 on move 28 left Pragg in an un-winnable situation, even though he had an additional pawn by this stage. By the end, when Pragg decided to throw in the towel, even the single pawn advantage of the Indian prodigy had disappeared. After the seventh …

Praggnanandhaa holds off Jorden van Foreest to stay unbeaten in Romania | Chess News

3 min readUpdated: May 17, 2026 11:36 PM IST India’s R Praggnanandhaa managed to sidestep a potential banana-peel of an opponent in Dutch grandmaster Jorden van Foreest in round 4 of the Super Chess Classic Romania 2026 tournament. Pragg’s 35-move draw on Sunday evening against Van Foreest means that the Indian prodigy has remained unbeaten so far at the event in Bucharest. While the result against the Dutchman is his third draw, Pragg managed to defeat World Championship contender Javokhir Sindarov, the one opponent he would have ached to defeat. Pragg and van Foreest were part of the five-player leading pack heading into the fourth round, but the draw ensured they are half a point behind the tournament leader Vincent Keymer. The day started with the game between Alireza Firouzja and Fabiano Caruana not being played because of what the organisers said was a “medical issue” for the French-Iranian grandmaster. Beginning with a Zukertort Opening, the Pragg versus van Foreest game didn’t light up at all and ended quickly as compared to the Indian grandmaster’s …

Praggnanandhaa bests MVL in tiebreaks to win Chess Classic Romania as Niemann praises GCT playoff format

Praggnanandhaa bests MVL in tiebreaks to win Chess Classic Romania as Niemann praises GCT playoff format

It took a herculean effort from Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Alireza Firouzja to win on-demand in their respective last classical round games to enforce a tiebreak with R. Praggnanandhaa, but the Indian showed tremendous resoluteness to eventually win the three-way tiebreaker. He beat MVL in the final blitz tiebreak to clinch the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT) — the Superbet Chess Classic Romania 2025 — on Friday night. Praggnanandhaa, who was leading by half a point over MVL and Firouzja, drew his last round game against the USA’s Levon Aronian, which allowed the French duo to catch up with him. The three-way tiebreak saw all three players pit against each other. The first two blitz matches — between Pragg and Firouzja and MVL and Firouzja — were drawn before the Indian got the better of MVL in the final blitz game. The tiebreak format, which is result-oriented with shorter time controls and Armageddon if necessary, was praised by American Grandmaster Hans Niemann. “GCT has a very creative Armageddon tiebreak format. An intriguing idea …

1.95-Million-Year-Old Evidence of Hominin Activity Discovered in Romania

Evidence of hominin activity has been discovered in Romania, dating back approximately 1.95 million years, significantly altering the timeline of human presence in Europe. Fossil remains, found at the Grăunceanu site in the Olteț River Valley, have provided the earliest known proof of hominin activity in the region. This discovery indicates that early humans reached Europe around half a million years earlier than previously believed. The findings suggest early hominins adapted to temperate and seasonal environments long before earlier evidence suggested. Findings from Grăunceanu Fossil Site According to a study published in Nature Communications, faunal remains from Grăunceanu, part of the Tetoiu Formation, were analysed, showing cut marks consistent with hominin butchery techniques. The research team, led by the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at Ohio University, examined over 4,500 specimens for modifications, including anthropogenic marks. Of these, 20 bones displayed surface marks, with seven being identified as cut-marked with high confidence. These marks were found on animal tibiae and mandibles, demonstrating defleshing practices.
