India voices ‘very deep’ concern over Ukraine conflict; urges Russia, Ukraine to return to dialogue and diplomacy

Jaishankar said on January 1 that India is on the side of peace and since beginning New Delhi’s effort has been to return to dialogue and diplomacy as differences cannot be settled through violence. The call marked the fourth telephone conversation between the two leaders this year and came days after Mr. Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington, his first trip abroad since the war in Ukraine began in February. Apart from discussing the G20, Mr. Zelenskyy thanked India for its help during the war. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin reviewed bilateral relations, including energy cooperation, in a phone conversation on Friday, and the Indian leader reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy as the “only way forward” in the Ukraine crisis. This was the fifth phone conversation between the two leaders since February this year, and they met in person on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at Samarkand in Uzbekistan in September, when Modi had told Putin in the context of the Ukraine conflict that “today’s era is not of war”.
