Tisca Chopra jokes her marriage with Saali Mohabbat co-writer Sanjay Chopra was on the brink of divorce every day: ‘Our neighbours thought…’ | Bollywood News

Tisca Chopra has turned director with Saali Mohabbat, backed by Manish Malhotra’s Stage 5 Productions, and starring Radhika Apte and Divyenndu. The film, streaming on ZEE5, revolves around a homemaker and a plant lover who discovers that her husband is cheating on her sister. But Tisca is no stranger to plants, infidelity on screen, and even storytelling. Remember her short film, Chutney? On this edition of SCREEN Spotlight, Tisca talks about the similarities between Chutney and Saali Mohabbat, casting Anurag Kashyap the actor, why she gave up on her career as a lead actor in the 1990s, avoiding mother roles after the resounding success of Taare Zameen Par, and surprising everyone by playing a sex symbol in Raj Mehta’s films. Saali Mohabbat is your directorial debut feature, but you’ve helmed the 2020 short film Rubaru earlier. Did that experience serve as a training ground for your feature debut? Yes, indeed it was. I made three short films — Chutney (2016), Chhuri (2017), and Rubaru. I acted in and wrote all three. I produced two of …

Tisca Chopra on writing Saali Mohabbat with Sanjay Chopra: `Almost got divorced`

When Saali Mohabbat was shaping up, Tisca Chopra wanted to act in the film as well as direct it. Producer Manish Malhotra, however, urged her to choose only one role. After she committed to directing, she understood why he had advised so.  Tisca Chopra “Directing is a mother-of-God hard job. Saali Mohabbat: Radhika Apte anchors Tisca Chopra’s wickedly fun directorial debut

Saali Mohabbat: Radhika Apte anchors Tisca Chopra’s wickedly fun directorial debut

Actor Tisca Chopra‘s directorial debut, Saali Mohabbat, evokes a feeling of déjà vu, like the aftertaste of a certain dish whose name we can’t recall. But it’s a lingering memory of something strong and uncommon. The answer lies within the context itself, as Saali Mohabbat seems to have grown from the same seed that came in the form of a short film, Chutney, a few years ago. Tisca played the lead role of a woman who knows more than she shows in that sinister little film, a trait that is shared by the protagonist of her feature film here, Smita, played by Radhika Apte. Radhika Apte gives a sharp performance in this murder mystery. But what made the short film so memorable was the way the details were never spoon-fed to the viewer, and the intrigue unfolded along the way without requiring too much effort. Saali Mohabbat loses some of its momentum from the placement of Smita from the beginning, as she begins to tell a story that takes the viewer into a flashback. Tisca, …

Updated on: Dec 12, 2025 03:51 pm IST Radhika Apte delivers a strong performance in Saali Mohabbat, but the film falters towards its climax. Saali MohabbatDirector: Tisca ChopraCast: Radhika Apte, Divyendu Sharma, Anurag KashyapRating: ★★★ As I watched Saali Mohabbat, directed by actor Tisca Chopra, I was instantly reminded of Chutney, the popular short film she starred in a few years back. It almost feels like we’re witnessing the beginnings of a Tisca Chopra cinematic universe. Radhika Apte in a still from Saali Mohabbat. What is the story of Saali Mohabbat? Jokes aside, the plot centres on Smita (Radhika Apte), who narrates the story of a woman hurt by her husband Pankaj (Anshumaan Pushkar). He cheats on her with her cousin Shalini (Sauraseni Maitra), and one day, the adulterous pair is found dead. Investigating the case is a corrupt cop Ratan (Divyenndu). Finding out who murdered them forms the rest of this whodunit. The story tries hard to build suspense from the word go. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned- and Tisca (also …

Anurag Kashyap to do a cameo in Manish Malhotra`s Saali Mohabbat

Anurag Kashyap to do a cameo in Manish Malhotra`s Saali Mohabbat

Saying no was out of the question when Saali Mohabbat came Anurag Kashyap’s way. After all, the Radhika Apte and Divyenndu-starrer was among the first few productions of designer Manish Malhotra, who is among his close friends. Couple that with the taut script of director Tisca Chopra’s howdunnit, and Kashyap was sold on the idea of featuring in a cameo.  Radhika Apte in the film “What drew me to Saali Mohabbat was, first and foremost, the script. I’ve also had a wonderful experience working with Tisca earlier on the short film Chhuri [2017]. So, the opportunity to collaborate again was an immediate yes,” he says. Then there was, of course, Malhotra. “I’ve admired Manish since my first film Satya [1998], where he styled Urmila [Matondkar]. I have turned to him without hesitation whenever I’ve been unsure about what to wear for a major event. When he told me he was launching his production house and that Saali Mohabbat would be among his first films, there was no question of saying no.”   Tisca Chopra Kashyap, …
