Sabalenka says she ‘just wants to quit tennis right now’ after French Open loss

3 min readJun 3, 2026 09:49 PM IST World no.1 Aryna Sabalenka cut a frustrated figure after her shock loss to Russia’s Diana Shnaider on Wednesday, with the Belarus player even going to the extent of saying that she felt like quitting tennis after the defeat. “No thoughts, no emotions. I just want to quit tennis right now, but we’ll see in A few days. Hopefully I’ll get back on track mentally. I feel I had very decent opportunities in the second set. I screwed up, and then she stepped in and ‌she played great. I feel mentally I couldn’t really recover after second set. I think that was the biggest mistake from me. I don’t know when the last time was (that) I lost 10 games in a row. I guess mentally I got into very deep, dark hole over there and I just couldn’t get back on track,” Sabalenka said after the match. Shnaider battled from a set and a double break down to shock Sabalenka 3-6 7-5 6-0 in blustery conditions and …

Aryna Sabalenka knocked out by Diana Shnaider in French Open quarterfinal

3 min readJun 3, 2026 07:37 PM IST In another major upset in the ongoing French Open, World no.1 Aryna Sabalenka was on Wednesday eliminated from the tournament after losing to Russia’s Diana Shnaider 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. The four-time major winner Sabalenka led 4-1 in the second set and was two points from victory when serving for the match at 5-4 before completely collapsing against a player appearing in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Sabalenka stood still and screamed loudly after losing a point to fall 0-30 down in the sixth game of the decider and, although she saved two match points at 0-40 down, she lost the match when she sent a shot into the net. Sabalenka showed similar nerves when she lost in last year’s final to Coco Gauff. Earlier, Wednesday, Maja Chwalinska extended her remarkable French Open run by beating No. 22-seeded Anna Kalinskaya 7-6 (3), 6-3 Wednesday. The 24-year-old absorbed the power of the 22nd seed superbly, repeatedly forcing Kalinskaya into errors by extending rallies and making her …

Days after prize money protest, Sabalenka wears jewellery worth Rs 97 lakh on court

3 min readMay 27, 2026 10:27 AM IST World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka walked onto court at Roland Garros wearing jewellery valued at more than £75,000 (approx Rs 97 lakh) — just days after joining leading players in pushing for a larger share of Grand Slam revenues and improved prize money distribution for lower-ranked professionals. The Belarusian, who opened her French Open campaign with a straight-sets win over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, sported diamond-and-garnet necklaces and earrings reportedly supplied by New York luxury jeweller Material Good. The jewellery was worth more than the prize money earned by players who exited in the first round. Telegraph Sport reported ‘it has provided three necklaces and a pair of earrings worth a total of $148,000 for the tournament’. “Sabalenka elected not to wear the third necklace on court yesterday (Tuesday). The jewellery, which has been designed to coordinate with the Belarusian’s black-and-red Nike dress, includes over 200 carats of garnets and 23 carats of diamonds,” the daily reported. The timing drew attention because the jewellery worn on court was …

‘Only way to fight for our rights’: Aryna Sabalenka warns of Grand Slam boycott ahead of French Open | Tennis News

4 min readMay 6, 2026 07:00 AM IST Aryna Sabalenka has called for tennis players to boycott Grand Slams if they are not paid a higher percentage of the revenue the top tier events on the tennis calendar make. Sabalenka’s comments come on the heels of a letter the top tennis players, both male and female, wrote recently criticising the French Open prize money on offer this year. “I think at some point we will boycott it (Grand Slams),” Sabalenka said on the sidelines of the Italian Open. “I feel like that’s going to be the only way to fight for our rights.” Sabalenka, who turned 28 on Tuesday, has already pocketed four Grand Slams. After her comments, other female tennis players also spoke about them being open to boycotting Grand Slams if they are not paid a higher portion of the prize money. It must be noted that the players had also demanded other things such as better representation, health care benefits and pensions. “Without us there wouldn’t be a tournament and there wouldn’t …

Why top tennis players like Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka are unhappy with French Open organisers | Tennis News

2 min readMay 4, 2026 06:05 PM IST Some of the world’s top tennis players have put out a statement expressing their ‘deep disappointment’ at the prize money on offer at the French Open this year. The players include names like Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka. Novak Djokovic’s name was missing from the statement. Sinner and Co are angered by the fact that the French Open organisers announced that the prize money for the second Grand Slam of the year will be increased by around 10% for an overall pot of 61.7 million euros ($72.1 million), with the total amount up 5.3 million euros from last year. But the players pointed out in their statement that this increase means that the players’ share of French Open tournament revenue has declined from 15.5% in 2024 to 14.9% projected in 2026. According to French Open organisers’ announcement last week, men’s and women’s singles winners will pocket 2.8 million euros while the runners-up in both categories will walk away with 1.4 million euros. The semifinalists will …

Four years ago she won the first set but lost the final in three. This time, after breaking in the first game and taking the first set, she rallied after losing the second set and going down 3-0 in the third. She won five straight games and then closed out with an ace on her first championship point. It was a second major title for fifth-seeded Rybakina, who won Wimbledon in 2022 and entered that final four years ago as the only major winner in the contest. The 27-year-old Belarusian, who lost to Madison Keys in the 2025 final, admitted that she found it hard to believe that she had become the first player since Martina Hingis in 2002 to reach four consecutive Australian Open finals. “I cannot believe that, it is an incredible achievement. But the job is not done yet. I am super happy with the win, she (Svitolina) is a great opponent and was playing incredible tennis throughout the week.
