Why US border crews are blasting a 1,000-year-old sacred mountain with dynamite | World News

White sage burning, Norma Meza Calles gathers guests at a Mexican wellness resort into a semicircle facing Kuuchamaa Mountain and asks everyone to close their eyes and feel its presence. “This is sacred to us like a church for you all. The mountain is our healer, our psychologist,” said Meza Calles, a Kumeyaay Nation tribal leader who explains that in its creation story a shaman transformed into the mountain. “Here is where we gather strength to live in this difficult world.” Then she calls for a moment of reflection. But the silence is pierced by the crushing of rock. US federal contractors have been blasting and bulldozing Kuuchamaa, which straddles both countries, to make way for new sections of wall along the US-Mexico border. Indigenous leaders say that in the Trump administration’s rush to build border walls, contractors are desecrating Native American sacred places and cultural sites at an unprecedented pace, more than 170 years after the international boundary split the territories of dozens of tribes. Federal crews set off blasts on sacred mountain Barrier …

3 min readMumbaiMay 15, 2026 08:09 AM IST Saif Ali Khan has been at the heart of the streaming revolution in India. It began with him donning the uniform and the turban for the role of Sartaj Singh in Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane’s 2017 crime thriller show Sacred Games, which laid the foundation stone 0f Netflix in India. Nine years later, he’s donned the police uniform again for Pulkit’s cop drama Kartavya, which drops on Netflix India on May 15. I remember we were on a holiday, and it came through. I was so excited. There couldn’t have been a better show to start with, on cops and mafia from those directors,” Saif tells SCREEN in an exclusive interview. He, in fact, saw Sacred Games as what Narcos was to Columbia back then. “Netflix had just finished Narcos, which had become an …

‘They don’t invite me now’: PM Modi speaks against destination weddings abroad, says no place as ‘sacred’ as India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration of the Sardardham Hostel in Vadodara on Monday. (ANI Photo) “The moment holidays begin, children are handed tickets to go abroad,” he said at an event in Gujarat, speaking in Hindi, “The trend nowadays is to travel overseas, often for destination weddings.” “There are many people here who do not send me invitations anymore. They used to send them in the past because they would hold their weddings abroad,” he said with a smile, pointing towards the large number of community leaders present on stage at the inauguration of a hostel built by the Patidar/Patel community. “But now they are stopping that practice,” he added. ‘Expense in foreign currency’ “This trend of destination weddings abroad has been growing rapidly; however, consider the fact that this entails a significant expenditure of foreign currency. Ask yourselves: are there no places within India …

PM Modi: Somnath’s glory and the sacred idea of Bharat: In a world marked by divisions, the spirit of unity is more relevant than ever | India News

PM Modi: Somnath’s glory and the sacred idea of Bharat: In a world marked by divisions, the spirit of unity is more relevant than ever | India News

At the start of 2026, I had gone to Somnath for the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, marking a thousand years since the first attack on the Somnath Temple. Now, I will be back in Somnath on May 11 to mark 75 years since the inauguration of the restored temple by the then President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad. In less than half a year, it is a privilege to be attending two important milestones relating to Somnath and its journey from ruin to renewal, or what we describe as from “Vidhvans” to “Srijan”. Somnath gives us a civilisational message. The vast sea before it evokes timelessness. The waves tell us… that no matter how fierce the storms are or how turbulent the tides are, one can always rise again with dignity and strength. The waves return to the shore, as though reminding every generation that the spirit of the people can never be subdued for long. Our ancient scriptures say: प्रभासं च परिक्रम्य पृथिवीक्रमसंभवम्. It means, a Pradakshina of the divine Prabhasa (Somnath) is equal to …

Viraha: Understanding the sacred ache of longing through Urdu poetry and the monsoon | Eye News

Viraha: Understanding the sacred ache of longing through Urdu poetry and the monsoon | Eye News

It begins not with a sound, but with the absence of one. The room still holding the echo of laughter, the residue of revelry, the shimmer of voices that rose and receded, of glasses set down too quickly, of bodies that leaned in just a little too close, of eyes that promised something and meant something else. And now, nothing. Just the low, lingering, liquid hum of the sea pressing itself against Bombay’s edges, as if the city is breathing in my place, because I have forgotten how. This—this quiet, creeping, consuming ache—has a name. Viraha. In the languages of the subcontinent, Viraha is not simply longing, not merely missing someone. It is the sacred, searing space between presence and absence. It is love stretched across distance, across time, across impossibility. It is the moment when you are fine all day—fluid, functional, forward—until you are not. It is the body remembering what the world has taken away. It is desire without destination, devotion without fulfilment. It is grief that glows, absence that arrives, loss that …

Courts should not define sacred practices, Sant Samiti tells SC

Courts should not determine essential religious practices as they are a matter of faith held to be sacred by the followers of a religion, the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti has told the Supreme Court while seeking to intervene in the upcoming Sabarimala review proceedings. A nine-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant is set to commence the final hearing on April 7 on petitions relating to discrimination against women at religious places, including the Sabarimala temple in Kerala, and on the ambit and scope of the religious freedom practised by multiple faiths.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Centuries-old Renaissance sacred music echoes again in Goa churches| India News

Centuries-old Renaissance sacred music echoes again in Goa churches| India News

As dusk settled over the neo-Gothic styled Mae de Deus Church, strains of a centuries-old motet— form of sacred music during Renaissance-era—rose once again, signalling a quiet cultural revival in Goa. Long relegated to fading memory, these deeply meditative Lenten (sacred musical) compositions, once central to Holy Week observances, are now being rediscovered and revived by a new generation of choirs in this church in north Goa’s Saligao. Centuries-old Renaissance sacred music return to Goa churches, as choirs revive a unique Renaissance-era sacred music tradition during Holy Week. These evocative compositions, rooted in passages from the Bible, recount the suffering and death of Jesus Christ through layered, polyphonic harmonies known as motets. Once an integral part of Lenten liturgy in Goa, this musical tradition had gradually slipped into decline but is now being revived. One such motet, Udkacho Hunvar Zala (“a flood of water”), reflects on the moment a Roman soldier pierced Christ’s side, causing blood and water to flow—a powerful image drawn from the Gospel narrative. It is among hundreds of Latin and Konkani …

Sacred Games actor Elnaaz Norouzi’s explosive warning on Mojtaba Khamenei and Iran’s ‘ruined’ future: ‘Who made him the Supreme Leader?’ | Bollywood News

Elnaaz Norouzi has been quite vocal about the alienation she feels in her home country of Iran, especially amid the ongoing Iran-Israel-US conflict. The actor, who has German citizenship and has worked in a number of Hindi films and shows, is disillusioned by the direction in which Iran is heading even after the recent assassination of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “As a 6 year old we were made to chant ‘Death to America, Death to Israel’ in school. These are the things this regime forces upon people. There are so many rights people do not have in that country. This regime has no plans of leaving, it doesn’t listen to its people, people cannot even vote,” Elnaaz told SCREEN in an exclusive interview. “The next leader is just being chosen by them. People don’t have the right to say if they don’t want it, when they protest they are shot down, raped, or imprisoned. How exactly are the Iranians suppose to overthrow this regime, with empty hands? When the regime brings foreign militia …
