Researchers controlled key environmental factors like temperature, humidity, light intensity, and carbon dioxide levels, to replicate Kashmir-like conditions. (Representative image: Getty) The horticulture college in Mojerla, Wanaparthy district of Telangana, has now proven that the prized saffron flower, once thought to grow only in the mountainous regions of Kashmir, can successfully be cultivated in Telangana as well. With support from NABARD, the college experimented with aerophonic technology, and its success has opened up new possibilities for the state’s agriculture sector. By demonstrating that saffron farming is possible even in Telangana’s climate, the project has created a promising new source of income for farmers. Under the leadership of Professor Dr Pidiga Saidayya, a special aerophonic unit spread across 200 square feet was set up at the Mojerla Horticulture College. PM Modi further said that the “wounds and pain” of centuries are healing as a 500-year-old resolve is finally being fulfilled with the formal completion of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. As reported by news agency PTI, PM Modi further made the remarks after ceremonially hoisting a saffron flag atop the Ram temple in Ayodhya, an event marking the official completion of the shrine. Researchers at Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticulture University used aeroponic methods to cultivate the crop in a 200 sq. ft. lab, and it bore flowers. Although researchers are confident of its grade, the flowers will be sent to a lab to establish the quality. Vice Chancellor, Danda Rajireddy, said that they will soon share the knowledge with interested farmers and youth in rural localities. The aeroponic method does not need soil. Temperature is controlled, and water and essential nutrients are supplied in the form of mist. The lab is at Morije Horticultural College – affiliated to the University. Vertical farming is being used to accommodate 200 kgs of saffron bulbs.  Pidigam Saidaiah, principal investigator of the Saffron project, said that they brought the saffrom bulbs and began farming two months ago.
