Saibaba had alleged in August this year that he was not taken to a hospital for 9 months by authorities. Hyderabad/New Delhi: The body of former Delhi University (DU) professor and rights activist GN Saibaba who passed away in Hyderabad, will be donated to a hospital as he wished, said a statement issued by his family on Sunday. Saibaba, 58, was released from the Nagpur Central Jail after 10 years of incarceration after the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court set aside the life sentence given to him by a trial court, in an alleged Maoist links case in which the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was invoked. Saibaba’s body will be kept at his brother’s house in Jawahar Nagar, Hyderabad, for his relatives, friends and well-wishers to pay homage, on Monday. Afterwards, his body will be donated to state-run Gandhi Medical College. His eyes have already been donated to LV Prasad Eye Hospital, the family said in a statement. Even though former Delhi University assistant professor Dr G N Saibaba, who passed away at the age of 57 in Hyderabad on Saturday, was acquitted in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act case in March this year, he was continuing another legal fight in the Delhi High Court, for his reinstatement at Ram Lal Anand College. Dr Saibaba was terminated as an assistant professor at DU’s Ram Lal Anand College in March 2021. He had been teaching English at Ram Lal Anand College since 2003. He was suspended in 2014 after being arrested by the Maharashtra police on May 9 of that year for suspected Maoist links. He continued receiving 50 per cent of his salary after that. But on March 31, 2021, RLA College’s principal Rakesh Kumar Gupta issued a memorandum terminating his services with immediate effect, paying him three months’ salary. (File) Hyderabad: Former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba died at a state-run hospital here due to post-operative complications on Saturday, seven months after he was acquitted in an alleged Maoist links case. He was 54. GN Saibaba was suffering from gall bladder infection and was operated on two weeks ago but developed complications subsequently. He breathed his last around 9 pm on Saturday, an official told PTI. He was admitted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) for the last 20 days. In March, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court acquitted GN Saibaba and five others in the alleged Maoist links case, noting that the prosecution had failed to prove the case against him. The court also set aside his life sentence. It had held as “null and void” the sanction procured by the prosecution to charge the accused under provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Saibaba expressed shock and disbelief at his untimely demise on Saturday (October 12, 2024) night stating that he could not enjoy the freedom he got after long repression by the State. Prof. Saibaba passed away on Saturday (October 12, 2024) night after close to three-weeks of treatment in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad. A close associate of Prof. Saibaba, Mr. K. Ravichander of the Forum Against Repression told The Hindu that the former was admitted into Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences on September 19, 2024 with gall bladder related ailment. Doctors at the hospital operated him for gall bladder ailment on September 26. “The surgery was successful and unfortunately after five days, infection set in and this was also cleared. A bench of justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta admitted the state government`s appeal, even as it observed that the high court order was “prima facie well reasoned”. The bench also rejected the oral request of Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the Maharashtra government for early listing of the appeal and said it will come in due course. “There cannot be any urgency in the order of reversal of conviction. Had it been the other way around, we would have considered,” the bench told Raju.Justice Mehta said it is a hard-earned acquittal and in normal course, this court should have dismissed this appeal.
