In the assembly polls held in Jammu and Kashmir after a hiatus of ten years, three women were elected among the 90 members, with one woman being a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Jammu region and the other two belonging to the National Conference in the Kashmir division. Indian para powerlifters kicked off their Paralympic campaign in Paris, but it was not a good outing for them. On Wednesday, Parmjeet Kumar and Sakina Khatun finished in 8th and 7th position, respectively. Paramjeet Kaur could only manage a lift of 150 Kg on his first attempt and then had two consecutive failed attempts at 157 and 161 Kg lifts in the men’s up to 49 Kg final. Para powerlifter Sakina Khatun secured two bronze medals in the Best Lift and Total Lift categories, at the Para Powerlifting World Cup 2024, on Saturday7. Competing in the Women’s Up to 55kg event, Khatun impressed spectators with a formidable lift of 93 kgs. Despite her commendable performance, Khatun’s journey was tinged with a hint of disappointment as she narrowly missed out on a chance to qualify for the highly anticipated Paralympics 2024. With subsequent attempts at 98 kg, Khatun pushed her limits but was unable to secure the lift needed for qualification.
