Farmers protesting against police action in Barnala. Talking to reporters at the Kharar tehsil office in Mohali, Mann said he had categorically told the farmer bodies that they should not remain under the impression that he could not take action. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha strongly condemned the Punjab Police action, terming it a “dictatorial step by the Bhagwant Mann government to suppress the democratic rights of farmers for peaceful protest”. Opposition parties criticised the AAP government for the crackdown, which came a day after talks between Mann and SKM leaders ended abruptly with the CM walking out of their meeting. “The government cannot stifle the voice of farmers with such steps,” Bharti Kisan Union (Lakhowal) general secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal. …

‘Batoge toh lutoge’: Amid Dallewal fast, farm unions step up unity bid to turn heat on Centre | Political Pulse News

Last Friday, several leaders of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) – an umbrella organisation of many farm unions from Punjab and other states – reached Khanauri to check on Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the SKM (non-political) coordinator, who has been on fast-unto-death since November 26. The SKM leaders who met Dallewal included Rakesh Tikait, BKU (Tikait) leader, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, general secretary of BKU (Lakhowal), and Manjit Singh Dhaner, president of BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner). They said they visited Khanauri on behalf of their respective unions and not as the SKM representatives. So far, the SKM has stayed away from the farmers’ sit-in protests being led by the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and the SKM (non-political), which have been continuing at Shambhu and Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana borders since February 13 this year. The SKM has maintained that while it supports their demands – which include legal status for minimum support price (MSP) of crops and farm debt waiver, among others – they have reservations about their “mode of protest”. However, various farm bodies seem to have …

Fasting Dallewal’s health worsens as Centre and state play blame game | Chandigarh News

As Samyukta Kisan Morcha leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s fast unto death entered its 16th day at the Khanauri border, the Punjab and central governments remain locked in a blame game, showing little urgency in addressing the farmers’ demands. Despite four rounds of talks held in February this year, the Centre has not initiated a fifth round of dialogue with the agitating farmers. Meanwhile, Punjab’s top leadership has made no direct appeal to the Centre to resolve the impasse. Two days ago, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene, but no action has followed. The protesting farmers have expressed their willingness to negotiate with the Centre, yet no communication has been forthcoming, even as Dallewal’s health continues to decline. Efforts by Punjab Police to convince Dallewal to undergo medical examinations have been unsuccessful. A team of doctors was turned away by protesting farmers on Wednesday. “We’ve been urging him to get checked, but he refuses. He’s elderly, a cancer patient, and hasn’t allowed any tests or intravenous fluids. Forcing him …
