Chhattisgarh man charred to death, 4 injured in sand mining dispute linked attack

A 60-year-old man was charred to death, and four others sustained serious injuries in an attack allegedly linked to a long-running dispute over sand mining at Katgodi village in Chhattisgarh’s Korea district on Tuesday night. Police said four people have been arrested. (Shutterstock) Police said the five were travelling in two vehicles when members of a rival group attacked them. Preliminary investigation suggests the attackers repeatedly rammed one of the vehicles with a truck, damaging the vehicle and jamming its doors, preventing those inside from escaping. The attackers assaulted some occupants of the vehicle who attempted to break the windows and flee when it caught fire. Eyewitnesses claimed that the attackers poured fuel on the SUV before setting it ablaze. Police said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established, as the vehicle had struck an electricity pole. Forensic experts were examining whether the vehicle was set on fire or whether the collision triggered the blaze. One of the occupants, Bharat Singh, was charred to death. Two others suffered severe burn injuries. …

From standing knee-deep in sand as a child to India’s fastest quarter-miler | Sport-others News

4 min readRanchiMay 26, 2026 06:49 AM IST Thirteen years back, when Thennarasu took his son, Vishal T K, to a stadium in Jolarpet town in Tamil Nadu, it wasn’t to make him a runner. His son had trouble walking since he was born with knock knees. Thennarasu, a dairy farmer who had played football for the state, had heard that burying his child’s legs knee-deep in the long jump pit could help straighten them. When at the stadium, after his daily stand-pit ritual, Vishal would sit and watch long-distance runners. Then one day, he joined them and thus began his track and field journey. On Saturday in Ranchi, Vishal, 23, crossed the 400m finish line in 44.98 seconds — the first Indian in history to go below 45. Thennarasu raced onto the track and the two embraced. “What I felt after he crossed the finish line can’t be expressed in words,” Thennarasu said. “Not even in my dreams.” He paused. “But when he started progressing and doing well, I could see he had a …

Cracking down on illegal sand mining

Cracking down on illegal sand mining

Illegal sand-mining at the Chambal’s banks has become emblematic of a problem that several rivers in India now face. As HT reported on Monday, the bleak state of the National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary — with deep indentations fracturing the floodplains in several places and threatening the survival of many protected species — highlights the ecological impact of illegal sand-mining. Sand mining often exceeds the river’s natural replenishment by several multiples, threatening banks with collapse while groundwater tables in surrounding areas plummet and animal and avian habitats are destroyed. (HT Archive) The costs of such unheeding extraction are now well known. Mining often exceeds the river’s natural replenishment by several multiples, threatening banks with collapse while groundwater tables in surrounding areas plummet and animal and avian habitats are destroyed. Illegal sand mining’s link to the construction and infrastructure development boom is also well known. The problem is that scrutiny is sporadic and often lacks adequate support action from the State. Indeed, several courts, including the Supreme Court in the case of Chambal, have lamented this in related …

Mahanadi Sand Mining Nexus Under Lens After Murder

Mahanadi Sand Mining Nexus Under Lens After Murder

At first glance, it could pass for a desert. Pale beige sand forms steep slopes as far as the eye can see, the stark landscape broken only by occasional ridges, faint vehicle tracks, and earthmovers piling sand onto waiting tractors. But look closer, and the differences emerge: patches of green shrubbery and, just beyond, the Mahanadi, summer-worn and thinner than in the monsoon. This is a sand quarry in Karhi village in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district. Last week, the 18-year-old son of a Congress leader was shot dead and another son wounded when armed men forced their way into their house late at night. There have been no arrests yet. The killing has drawn attention to ongoing concerns around illegal sand mining in the area, although police said the motive is still under investigation and no link has been established so far. According to data from the district administration, 46 cases related to illegal sand mining were registered by the mining branch in Karhi over the last two years, with Rs 8 lakh collected in penalties. …
