Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and advocate Priyanka Tibrewal in a letter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged, “acts of violence, intimidation by the police and local politicians against victims of sexual violence in Sandeshkhali area.” “Local administration of Sandeshkhali including the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, North 24 Parganas, failed and neglected to install CCTV cameras in the sensitive areas of Sandeshkhali, as recorded by the order… passed by the Hon’ble High Court,” Tibrewal wrote in her letter. Tibrewal, the advocate for some of the alleged victims, had last month demanded in the High Court that action be taken against complicit officials and had also prayed for the transfer of investigation to the CBI. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on May 10 asserted that the Trinamool Congress stood for “tushtikaran (appeasement), mafia and corruption” while criticising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for “remaining silent” on the Sandeshkhali issue. Addressing back-to-back rallies in Ranaghat and Birbhum Lok Sabha constituencies, Mr. Shah alleged that women of Sandeshkhali were “tortured on the basis of religion”, and mocked TMC’s slogan ‘Maa Mati Manush’, saying it has now transformed into “mullah madrassa mafia” owing to the politics of appeasement. As the news of former TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh being arrested spread across Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, it was seen as a victory for the island’s many women who had suffered in silence for years.
