Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit the riverine island of Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district today– a first since the sexual harassment controversy broke out ahead of the Lok Sabha election. But the Leader of Opposition, BJP’s  Suvendu Adhikari will not be far behind. Mr Adhikari has announced that he would hold a ‘Jana Sanjog Yatra’ in the area the day after the Chief Minister’s visit.  The Chief Minister will be heading for Sandeshkhali early today to chair a public distribution programme.  The obscure island in West Bengal had hit the headlines earlier this year, before the Lok Sabha elections. Its trigger was the protest by the locals against alleged incidents of sexual assault and land grabbing. Sandeshkhali: Shahjahan Sheikh charged with attempt to murder by CBI

Suspended TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, his brother and five others have been charged with criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder by the CBI in connection with a mob attack on an Enforcement Directorate team in Sandeshkhali on January 5, reported PTI citiing officials on Tuesday. The agency`s first charge sheet in the case was filed on Monday before a Basirhat special court, they said. The ED team was attacked by a 1,000-strong mob when it went to raid Sheikh`s house in connection with the multi-crore ration distribution scam in West Bengal. It had also gone to arrest Sheikh because of his alleged close links with arrested former state food minister Jyoti Priya Mallick, under the scanner in the scam, they said. The charge sheet is against seven people, including Sheikh, his brother Alomgir and associates Jiauddin Mollah, Mafujar Mollah, and Didarbaksh Mollah, they said. The CBI has invoked Indian Penal Code Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 307 (attempt to murder) on the accused besides rioting and unlawful assembly among a number of other charges, reported …

West Bengal | Sandeshkhali TMC worker detained for ‘molesting’ minor girl

A TMC worker has been detained for allegedly molesting a minor girl in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali area, police said. According to the complaint lodged by the girl’s mother, the accused “somehow” entered their house on Friday night and molested the minor. The riverine Sandeshkhali area — situated on the borders of the Sundarbans, about 100 km from Kolkata — had been on the boil in February with protests over allegations of sexual abuse and land grab against now-arrested TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters. The girl, a Class-8 student, managed to escape and started shouting for help as family members and neighbours came out, police said, quoting the complaint. An officer of Basirhat Police District said the accused, around 20-years-old, is being questioned. A medical test has been conducted on the girl, he said, adding that its report is awaited. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and advocate Priyanka Tibrewal in a letter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged, “acts of violence, intimidation by the police and local politicians against victims of sexual violence in Sandeshkhali area.” “Local administration of Sandeshkhali including the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, North 24 Parganas, failed and neglected to install CCTV cameras in the sensitive areas of Sandeshkhali, as recorded by the order… passed by the Hon’ble High Court,” Tibrewal wrote in her letter.
