In a battle between the second-highest-ranked team of the tournament and the second-lowest, the result was hardly in any doubt. But Salima Tete-led India took their time in their opener at the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, Bihar before eventually prevail 4-0 over Malaysia, thanks to a solid second-half showing. Coming into the tournament, head coach Harendra Singh had stressed on the need to improve the fitness and endurance levels of the team while also being smarter in front of goal. But the first half was frustrating for the hosts in that regard, just managing one goal that came courtesy Sangita Kumari in the 8th minute. However, when the match ended, the young forward from Simdega had scored another, and there were reasons to smile. Two goals in two minutes at the end of the third quarter for Preeti Dubey and Udita ensured there wasn’t an upset on the cards. And Sangita applied the finishing touch in the 55th minute. While Harendra has made it clear he wants his team to be set up with …

Photo: musicacademymadras.in The latest development in a sequence of events in the world of Carnatic music that has set social media abuzz is a strongly-worded response from The Music Academy, to the vocalist duo Ranjani and Gayathri, who declared their intention to withdraw from participating in the Academy’s 2024 conference, opposing the selection of vocalist T.M. Krishna as this year’s Sangita Kalanidhi. In a letter that was sent to them, the Academy’s president N. Murali said he was shocked by “its vituperative content, which is replete with unwarranted and slanderous assertions and insinuations verging on defamation, and its vicious tone against a respected senior fellow musician”. “The choice of Sangita Kalanidhi made year after year is a prerogative of The Music Academy and has always been made after careful deliberation, with the sole criterion being musical excellence demonstrated over a significant and sustained career. Kanimozhi’s ‘I stand with TM Krishna’ message amid row over Sangita Kalanidhi award | Latest News India

Amid a major row over Madras Music Academy awarding TM Krishna with Sangita Kalanidhi award, DMK MP Kanimozhi on Thursday defended the award and said the hate TM Krishna is receiving for his social beliefs or his engagement with Periyar is uncalled for. The award to Krishna drew flak from several Carnatic vocalists who even withdrew from the Music Academy Conference 2024. Carnatic vocalists Ranjani and Gayatri issued a statement announcing that they would not participate in the conference as it would be presided over by TM Krishna who, they said, caused immense damage to the Carnatic music world, insulted icons like Tyagaraja and MS Subbulakshmi. Kanimozhi said this hate subjected to TM Krishna is like the hate-filled speech given by certain Karnataka BJP leader. “Its dangerous to overlook Mr TM Krishna’s glorification of a figure like EVR who 1. Openly proposed a genocide of ‘brahmins’2. Repeatedly called/abused every woman of this community with vile profanity 3. Relentlessly worked to normalize filthy language in social discourse,” their statement read. Hindustan Times – your fastest source …
