Vinesh Phogat’s comeback halted: WFI issues show-cause notice, declares star ineligible until June 26 | Sports News

The row between Vinesh Phogat and the Wrestling Federation of India intensified on Saturday when the WFI issued a show-cause notice to the wrestler, accusing her of indiscipline and anti-doping rule violations, and declared her ineligible to compete in domestic events till June 26, 2026 for failing to complete the mandatory six-month notice period required for athletes returning from retirement under UWW Anti-Doping Rules, as per a PTI report. In the notice, the WFI alleged that Vinesh’s conduct had caused “lasting damage to reputation of Indian wrestling” in Paris and violated provisions of the WFI Constitution, UWW International Wrestling Rules and anti-doping regulations. Due to the latest setback, Vinesh will now have to wait for her comeback, with the wrestler now being declared ineligible for the National Open Ranking event in Gonda, starting on Sunday, which was supposed to be her return to competition after quitting the sport in 2024 following her disqualification from the Paris Olympic Games. “We have to see if WADA rules have been followed properly. After ending Vinesh Phogat’s hopes, WFI threatens to bar India’s top U-23 wrestlers from Asian Games trials

3 min readMay 7, 2026 10:58 PM IST Vinesh Phogat is not the only wrestler whose hopes of competing in the Asian Games selection trials have been dashed by the Wrestling Federation of India. A group of India’s top U-23 wrestlers are caught in the same bind after the federation scheduled the trials for May 30 and 31 — just four days after the U-23 Asian Championship in Da Nang, Vietnam concludes on May 26. On Thursday, the WFI issued a directive stating that any athlete who withdraws from the U-23 Asian Championship will also be barred from the Asian Games trials. The order affects some of India’s top wrestlers — including 2025 U-20 World Champion Kajal, Asian Championship medallists Mansi Lather and Neha Sangwan, and Zagreb Open bronze medallist Vicky. After Wednesday’s announcement of the trials, a few wrestlers who have routinely represented India at senior level in the last 12 months considered withdrawing from the age-group competition to focus on the Asiad selection. The WFI moved quickly to shut that door. ALSO READ …

Aman Sehrawat, Neha Sangwan’s suspensions lifted by Wrestling Federation of India | Sport-others News

Wrestling Federation of India on Friday lifted the suspensions of Olympic medallist Aman Sehrawat and junior wrestler Neha Sangwan. Aman and Neha were barred from wrestling activities after they were disqualified because of being overweight before their bouts at the recent World Championships and U20 World Championships, respectively. Aman, who competes in the 57kg category of men’s freestyle and won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year, was suspended for a year after he failed to make weight ahead of his first bout during the Worlds in Zagreb, Croatia in September. Neha, meanwhile, faced action because of missing weight at the U20 Worlds in Samokov, Bulgaria in August and was served a two-year suspension. 22-year-old Aman had claimed that he missed the weight due to a stomachache. “This is the first such mistake and I am embarrassed about it. But it wasn’t intentional and happened due to a stomach ache that developed the night before the weigh-in,” Aman had said recently.
