For now, however, the AAP appears in no mood for immediate damage control. Sources in the government said no decision on Arora’s Cabinet berth was likely in the near future and that the leadership was in a “wait-and-watch mode”. The dilemma before the AAP is not merely administrative but also political. The party already has a precedent at the national level. Mr. Arora, 62, was arrested on Saturday (May 9, 2026) evening at his official residence in Chandigarh by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a GST fraud case following raids against him. The central agency had also searched the premises of a company linked to Mr. Arora, Hampton Sky Realty Ltd, in Gurugram. The company said it had faith in the legal process and was fully cooperating with all the statutory authorities. Mr. Arora was brought by the ED sleuths to Gurugram, Haryana, from Chandigarh by road, the officials said. The special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Gurugram sent Arora to seven-day ED custody. The agency had sought his 10-day remand, they said. The ED is reportedly conducting the searches at five locations across Delhi, Gurugram, and Chandigarh, including the official residence allotted to Mr. Arora. The raids are also being conducted at office premises associated with Hampton Sky Realty Limited and other linked entities. According to an official, the ED had allegedly detected a case of large scale money laundering done by Sanjeev Arora through his company in fake Goods and Service Tax (GST) purchases of mobile phones of more than ₹100 crores and subsequent exports to round trip illegitimate funds from Dubai to India. The searches are being conducted under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday carried out searches at the residence of Punjab minister and MLA Sanjeev Arora, his son Kavya Arora, and his two business partners across Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab in connection with an ongoing investigation under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Officials said the raids have been underway since early Friday, covering 13 premises in Haryana`s Gurugram, Chandigarh, and Punjab`s Ludhiana and Jalandhar. The notification issued by the Central Government stated, “Exercising powers conferred by Section 54 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, the Central Government has appointed Sanjeev Khirwar, LAS (AGMUT:1994), as Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi,” as cited by news agency ANI.  Who is Sanjeev Khirwar? Khirwar, who has now been appointed as the new MCD Commissioner, is a 1994 AGMUT cadre officer.
