In a closely watched by-election in Maharashtra’s Beed district, the wife of slain sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was defeated in the race for the sarpanch post in Massajog village, reported the PTI. The result was declared on Wednesday following counting at the Kaij tehsil office. Returning Officer Santosh Karajwankar confirmed that Swarupanand Deshmukh secured victory by a margin of 92 votes. Ashwini Deshmukh, widow of the murdered sarpanch, had contested the election amid expectations of a sympathy wave. However, the electorate opted for Swarupanand Deshmukh, overturning the outcome of the previous election. In the last sarpanch poll, Santosh Deshmukh had narrowly defeated Swarupanand by just nine votes. Winner promises development and justice After the victory, Swarupanand Deshmukh said the mandate reflected people’s aspirations for development. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Walmik Karad, a key accused in sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh murder case, has filed an application in a Beed court seeking to be discharged, claiming there is no primary evidence against him, the prosecution said on Thursday. Karad moves court seeking discharge from sarpanch murder case The court has sought a response on the application from the state Crime Investigation Department , which is conducting a probe into the case. An accused can be discharged after filing of a chargesheet in a case, if the court is of the opinion that the offence against him is not prima facie made out. The accused then need not go through the trial in the case. According to a report with Lokmat Times, the Additional District Magistrate of Beed has issued a prohibitory order as a precautionary measure in the district from March 3 to March 17. In protest, citizens have called for a bandh in Beed district on Tuesday. After BJP MLA Suresh Dhas alleged that Walmik Karad, who is under arrest in a case linked to the murder of a sarpanch in Beed district, owns five flats and seven shops in Pune, the Maharashtra Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party asked the Pune police, CID and the Pune Municipal Corporation to immediately take action into the matter. Santosh Deshmukh, 45, a sarpanch of Massajog village in Kaiz tehsil, was abducted and murdered on December 9. Deshmukh’s family claimed that he was killed because he had opposed extortion attempts by local strongmen with links to the NCP.
