For most people, planting a tree is a one-time symbolic act. But for Maharashtra’s Beed district-based environmental activist Sudhakar Deshmukh, it has been a mission lasting more than four decades. Hailing from Mamdapur village in Ambejogai tehsil, Deshmukh has dedicated his life to planting and distributing saplings across the state, turning everyday social occasions into opportunities for environmental action. 18 lakh saplings and counting Over the years, Deshmukh is believed to have distributed more than 18 lakh saplings across Maharashtra. What makes his effort unique is how these saplings are shared. They are gifted during weddings, birthdays, housewarming ceremonies, retirement functions, religious events and public gatherings, making tree plantation a part of social celebrations. New Delhi May 7 The Delhi forest department is planning a mega plantation drive in June to plant around five lakh saplings across the capital as part of the broader greening push envisaged in the Green Action Plan, an official said on Thursday. Officials said the process of identifying plantation sites is currently underway. Till May 7, various planting agencies and departments had identified 1,060 sites across the city for the greening exercise. These locations include stretches along roads, institutions, vacant public spaces and other areas suitable for increasing green cover, the official said. The initiative drew participation from over 20,000 residents and has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records. The plantation was carried out in the Domari area near the Ganga riverfront, where authorities are developing a large urban forest named “Namo Van”. The project is spread across nearly 350 bighas of land and aims to boost greenery and biodiversity in the city. Hyderabad: Padma Shri awardee ‘Vanajeevi’ Ramaiah died in Khammam district of Telangana on Saturday, family sources said. He suffered a heart attack at his house in Reddipalli village, they said. He was 87. Daripalli Ramaiah, popularly known as the green crusader, “Chettu (tree) Ramaiah” or “Vanajeevi” in Khammam district, for planting more than one crore saplings over the last several decades, was recipient of Padma Shri Award for 2017. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy condoled the death of Mr Ramaiah and said his demise is an “irreparable loss” to the society. The Chief Minister further said Daripalli Ramaiah, strongly believed that survival of mankind is impossible without nature and environment, a release from CMO said. “Ramaiah launched plantation as an individual and influenced the entire society,” Revanth Reddy said adding the Padma Shri awardee inspired the youth by dedicating entire life to environmental protection.
