New imagery reveals part of Pakistani base razed after Indian airstrikes | Latest News India

The damage caused by India’s missile strikes to Pakistan’s crucial Nur Khan airbase in Rawalpindi could be more significant than previously thought as new satellite imagery shows the entire operations complex near the site of a strike has been demolished. The new satellite images from May 23 showing the demolition of the operations complex were posted on social media by Damien Symon, a geo-intelligence researcher at The Intel Lab, on Sunday (X-detresfa_) The new satellite images from May 23 showing the demolition of the operations complex were posted on social media by Damien Symon, a geo-intelligence researcher at The Intel Lab, on Sunday. Earlier satellite images had shown that the strike had hit some structures and destroyed two specialised military trucks. The Nur Khan airbase at Chaklala in Rawalpindi is located a short distance from the Strategic Plans Division, which oversees Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, and the army’s General Headquarters. The airbase is home to C-130 transport aircraft and surveillance platforms. The demolition of the entire complex near the site of India’s strike suggests the attack’s …

NASA Satellite Detects Tree Leaf Changes as Early Volcano Eruption Warning Signal

NASA Satellite Detects Tree Leaf Changes as Early Volcano Eruption Warning Signal

NASA scientists might soon be able to forecast volcanic eruptions by monitoring how trees respond from space. Now, in a new collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, they have discovered that tree leaves grow lusher and greener when previously dormant volcanic carbon dioxide seeps up from the ground — an early warning that a cone of magma is pushing upwards. Now, using satellites such as Landsat 8 and data from the recent AVUELO mission, scientists think this biological response could be visible remotely, serving as an added layer of early warning for eruptions in high-risk areas that currently menace millions worldwide. NASA Uses Tree Greening as Satellite Clue for Early Volcano Eruption Warnings in Remote Regions As per the research by NASA’s Earth Science Division at Ames Research Centre, greening occurs when trees absorb volcanic carbon dioxide released as magma rises. These emissions precede sulfur dioxide and are harder to detect directly from orbit. While carbon dioxide does not always appear obvious in satellite images, its downstream effects — enhanced vegetation, for example — can help reinforce existing volcanic early …

3D Tech, Drone Footage, Satellite Data: NIA Intensifies Probe Into Pahalgam Terror Attack

Last Updated:May 01, 2025, 20:08 IST Sources told CNN-News18 that the NIA has combined technical and human intelligence to build a high-resolution 3D model of the scene Security personnel inspect the site of a militant attack on tourists at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. (AP photo) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is using advanced forensic methods, including satellite imagery, drone footage, and detailed witness accounts—including those from victims’ families, pony operators, vendors, and local workers—to digitally reconstruct the crime scene of the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 men, mostly tourists, were killed on April 22, according to sources. Sources told CNN-News18 that the NIA has combined technical and human intelligence to build a high-resolution 3D model of the scene, helping investigators trace every movement and bullet trajectory linked to the attack. The 3D mapping process uses technologies like LiDAR, drone surveillance, and photogrammetry to create high-resolution spatial models, offering investigators precise tools for scene reconstruction and courtroom presentation. Sources said that the Pahalgam investigation is uniquely challenging due to its civilian focus and proxy warfare …

Maharashtra launches emergency operation centre for effective use of tech during disasters | Mumbai News

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the state-of-the-art State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) which aims to use new technology effectively for disaster management. “Due to climate change, the nature, intensity and frequency of disasters are changing. Therefore, it is necessary to emphasise on ‘mitigation’ and immediate response after incidents. It is important to have a strong ‘command and communication system’ for disaster management, and this center will be useful for taking decisions quickly and providing quick response,” said Fadnavis. The new SEOC includes bezel-free video wall, high capacity audio visual conferencing, data servers, high-speed computers, satellite phone, ham radios, LED video walls  and wireless sets, which can be used for timely response and coordination among all the systems during a disaster. Story continues below this ad Ground-based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance (Geo-DSS) is also implementing a “change detection” process based on AI and machine learning. This process is based on satellite imagery and will make it easier to understand the situation at the disaster site in near real time, assess the damage and …

Greenland’s Melting Glaciers Expose 1,620 km of New Coastline Since 2000

Greenland’s Melting Glaciers Expose 1,620 km of New Coastline Since 2000

Greenland’s melting glaciers have exposed 1,620 kilometers of previously ice-covered coastline in the last 20 years. Arctic marine-terminating glaciers have significantly receded, according to satellite imagery from 2000 to 2020, exposing new land to the elements. This change illustrates the continued effects of global warming as the region’s geography is altered by shrinking ice flows. The newly exposed areas now face environmental changes, such as possible ecosystem shifts, sediment displacement, and new opportunities for scientific exploration.Over the past two decades, glaciers melting in Greenland have revealed 1,620 kilometres of previously ice-covered coastline. Satellite imagery from 2000 to 2020 has shown a significant retreat in Arctic marine-terminating glaciers, exposing new land to the elements. Satellite Data Tracks Greenland’s Changing Landscape According to a study published in Nature Climate Change, researchers examined satellite images to map changes in the northern hemisphere’s glacier coverage. The study found that 2,466 kilometres of coastline have been revealed in the Arctic over 20 years, with Greenland accounting for 66 percent of the total. Glacial retreat has been most pronounced at Zachariae …

Explained | The escalation on the India-China border

The story so far: On December 9, 2022, Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Yangtse area in the Tawang region along the India-China border. The confrontation in Tawang was the most serious skirmish between the two sides since the Galwan Valley clash in 2020. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) has found that the skirmish that took place in December was aided by new road infrastructure on the Chinese side, part of rapid infrastructure development by China along the border in this region allowing access to key locations on the Yangste plateau more easily than a year ago. Through satellite imagery, ASPI examines the terrain in which the clash took place along the India-China border, where tens of thousands of Indian and Chinese troops continue to be deployed. Why Tawang? Tawang is a strategically significant Indian territory wedged between China and Bhutan. The region’s border with China is a part of the de facto but unsettled India-China border, known as the Line of Actual Control, or LAC. Within Tawang, the Yangtse plateau is important …
