Vinesh’s team to carry their own weighing scales for the Asian Games trials

Vinesh’s team to carry their own weighing scales for the Asian Games trials

If this were any other tournament, Vinesh Phogat would have been studying her opponents on the eve of her much-anticipated return to competition. Not least because she would be stepping on the mat for the first time in two years on Saturday – this time in the 53kg category. Instead, the two-time World Championship medallist and a three-time Olympian was glued to the Supreme Court proceedings, where the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) – in their last, desperate attempt – tried hard to stop her from competing in the Asian Games selection trials. After the bench comprising Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe cleared her participation, Vinesh and her team’s focus quickly turned to Saturday’s trials – preparing not just for the expected battles on the mat, but the unexpected ones off it too. Their measures include carrying their own weighing scales, designating a ‘trusted person from the inner circle’ to ensure Vinesh’s food and water are not tampered with, and filming the bouts, even though the Delhi High Court ordered that the trials …

Saudi Arabia scales back salary premiums for foreign talent, recruiters say | World News

Saudi Arabia scales back salary premiums for foreign talent, recruiters say | World News

Saudi firms are scaling back generous salary premiums that once lured top foreign talent into sectors such as construction and manufacturing as the kingdom reins in spending and reorders economic priorities, four recruiters told Reuters. Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, is more than halfway through its economic transformation blueprint, known as Vision 2030, aimed at reducing dependence on hydrocarbon income, creating jobs, and expanding industries such as tourism, real estate, mining and financial services. Story continues below this ad As part of the long-term plan, the kingdom has invested massively in multi-billion-dollar megaprojects, vastly increasing demand for high-skilled foreign workers, but has struggled with execution and delays. Foreign recruits should no longer expect to negotiate premiums of 40% or more, to sometimes even double their existing salaries, which were common earlier this decade, two of the sources said, with offers far more restrained now. “On the one hand you have the region’s biggest economy rationalising and on the other side, you have a huge supply of candidates who are very open to coming …

ITBP scales world’s fifth highest peak for the first time

The Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has successfully scaled Mt. Makalu — the world’s fifth highest peak, at an altitude of 8,485 metres from the sea level, the China-border guarding force said on Friday. The ascent to the Himalayan peak in Nepal was made on April 19, it said. The International Mountaineering Expedition to Mt. Makalu and Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m) was flagged off from Delhi on March 21. “It was a historic twin summit attempt — the first of its kind in ITBP history. Both peaks were being attempted for the first time by the force, adding to the challenge and legacy of this mission. Both peaks are in Nepal,” ITBP said in a statement. Led by Deputy Commandant Anoop Kumar Negi, and Nihas Suresh as Deputy Leader, the 12-member team was divided into two groups of six climbers each. The Mt. Makalu team achieved an 83% success rate, with five climbers reaching the summit at 8.15 a.m. on April 19. “The [Mt.] Annapurna team faced extreme weather, including a blizzard and whiteout conditions, and …

BSF scales down Beating Retreat ceremony; handshake with Pak. soldiers suspended

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stand guard at Integrated Check Post (ICP) after the government of India decides to close the ICP Attari with immediate effect following the Pahalgam terror attack, in Amritsar on Thursday. | Photo Credit: ANI With India announcing that it would close the Integrated Check Post in Punjab’s Attari — the land route for passenger movement between India and Pakistan — nationals from both countries were seen returning to their respective countries on Thursday (April 24, 2025). The Border Security Force (BSF) said it had “scaled down” the Beating Retreat ceremony held at three locations – Attari, Hussainiwala, and Sadki along the Pakistan border in Punjab – in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. The BSF’s Punjab frontier said in a statement that as part of a “calibrated decision”, it was “suspending” the symbolic handshake of the Indian guard commander with the Pakistan counterpart, and the border gates would remain closed during the ceremony. These steps, it said, reflected “India’s serious concern over cross-border hostilities and reaffirms that peace and provocation …

Greater Noida: Four held for tampering with electronic weighing scales for financial gain

Greater Noida: Four held for tampering with electronic weighing scales for financial gain

The Gautam Budh Nagar police, along with the SWAT (special weapons and tactics) team, busted a large-scale electronic weighing scale fraud operating across multiple states and arrested four individuals for manipulating weighbridges using electronic chips and remote-control devices to alter weight measurements. The suspects in police custody on Thursday. (HT Photo) Police said the fraud has been detected across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. The arrested individuals have been identified as Kapil Kumar and Manmohan Singh, both residents of Delhi, Vinay Kumar Sharma, a resident of Sonbhadra, and Dheeraj Sharma, a resident of Gurugram. According to police, the suspects would lure weighbridge owners with lucrative offers and install custom-made electronic chips inside the weighing machines. These chips, controlled via remote, allowed operators to manipulate the weight readings—either inflating or reducing the weight as per their preference. The fraud led to massive financial losses for companies dealing in construction materials such as steel bars, sand, and gravel, said Saad Miyan Khan, deputy commissioner of police, Greater Noida. “During interrogation, Kapil Kumar that …

The Assistant Referee from India scales a new peak

The Assistant Referee from India scales a new peak

In the wee hours of Friday, when the nation was sleeping after a night of exuberant Diwali celebrations, a certain Riiohlang Dhar was busy setting up a new benchmark for Indian football in the faraway Dominican Republic. Riiohlang, the 34-year-old FIFA Assistant Referee from Meghalaya, added a new chapter in the country’s football history when she supervised the semi-final between Spain and England at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup 2024 in the Dominican Republic. Spain won the match 3-0. It is a big achievement for an Indian referee, but Riiohlang said: “I am fortunate to have been able to offer a Diwali gift to Indian football in my small way.” She made it sound simple. Perhaps she is not the one to blow her own trumpet and talk about the hard work that earned her four matches in the ongoing U17 Women’s World Cup. Riiohlang, along with Referee Asaka Koizumi (Japan) and Assistant Referee Amal Badhafari (UAE), were the three-member group, who were among the busiest supervising officials in the FIFA U17 Women’s World …
