PV Sindhu’s frame-sake, the tall Devika Sihag, scalps her first Top 20 opponent in top seed Supanida Katethong at Thailand | Badminton News

3 min readJan 30, 2026 11:24 PM IST Devika Sihag, the 20-year-old shuttler from Punjab training at Bangalore, benefits from her long levers just like PV Sindhu. But more crucially, her attacking style opens up options that can trouble the big names in coming years. On Friday, playing the Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters Super 300 at Patumwan, the rangy shuttler came good against World No 16 Supanida Katethong to leave behind some frustrating months of almost-there results. Devika was 4-9 down against the Thailand southpaw who has often troubled Sindhu in the past, but is currently struggling with niggles. Still, the Indian went on a 5 point spree, and then kept the top seed at arm’s length, picking the right stroke to break the 19-19 deadlock. There was an exact same flurry in the second to go 10-6 up, and though Katethong went 17-16 ahead, Devika showed good aggression and calm to finish off on a canter in the second straight set, parrying off an offensive past the break. “My first time against Supanida, and …

Yuzvendra Chahal Picks 1st Hat-trick Of IPL 2025, Scalps 4 In 1 Over Including MS Dhoni; Becomes 1st Bowler To…

Yuzvendra Chahal produced a performance for the ages in the IPL 2025 as he became the first bowler this edition to pick a hat-trick. The Punjab Kings spinner finished with figures of 4/32 against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on Wednesday. In fact, he is the first bowler since IPL 2023 to pick a hat-trick. After conceding 23 runs in his first two overs, Chahal was brought into the attack by PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer in the 19th over. Though he was hit for six off the first ball, he picked MS Dhoni‘s wicket on the second ball. He went on to scalp Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad to complete his second hat-trick in the IPL.  Chahal is now the first player in history to take a hat-trick against CSK in the IPL. This is also the first instance of a bowler taking a hat-trick at Chepauk since 2008. That year CSK’s Laximipathy Balaji became the first to achieve the feat against Kings XI Punjab (now PBKS). The first-ever hat-trick …

Leon Mendonca, the Goan chess whiz known for Hawaiian shirts, attacking chess and appetite for big scalps

Leon Mendonca, the Goan chess whiz known for Hawaiian shirts, attacking chess and appetite for big scalps

At the recently-concluded Grenke Freestyle Chess Open 2025, a new terror on the chess board emerged from India: 19-year-old Leon Luke Mendonca, who defeated players like Ian Nepomniachtchi and Richard Rapport and ground out draws against grandmasters like Alexey Sarana, Wesley So and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. After the nine-round event ended on Monday in Karlsruhe, Leon was 10th in the standings out of 297 players. Of these, 31 players started the event with a better rating than the ever-smiling, bespectacled boy from Goa with a penchant for Hawaiian shirts and attacking chess. For Leon, who became India’s 67th grandmaster in 2020, moments under the bright arc lights on the global stage have been limited. His rise, after all, coincided with India discovering its golden generation with stars like world champion Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi. Unlike a Gukesh or a Pragg, who hail from chess-loving Chennai, Leon took his first steps in the sport in the small town of Saligao in Goa. But his rise is also testament to the fact that the sport is spreading …

“No Smog…”: Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri Roast Harry Brook After Varun Chakravarthy Scalps England Star

“No Smog…”: Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri Roast Harry Brook After Varun Chakravarthy Scalps England Star

England’s Harry Brook gave a bizarre explanation ahead of 2nd T20I against India in Chennai. He said that due to smog in Kolkata, it was difficult to play the spin of Varun Chakravarthy. “But with the smog the other night, it was a lot harder to pick. Hopefully the air is a bit clearer here and we can see the ball a bit easier. Facing spin in T20 cricket is probably the hardest thing in the game, especially because I always get out trying to absolutely smack it,” he said. Former India coach Ravi Shastri took a brutal dig at Brook regarding the comment ahead of the 2nd T20I. “Good news for Harry Brook. There is no smog here,” he said. Then when Varun Chakravarthy scalped Brook in the seventh over, Sunil Gavaskar quipped: “Light is clearer here. There is no smog.” India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and opted to bowl against England in the second T20I at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. India continued their good form in T20Is …

Table Tennis: Manav Thakkar, ranked 60, scalps World No 14 Korean Jang Woojin; Manush Shah blanks World No. 23 | Sport-others News

India’s World No. 60 Manav Thakkar got his first-ever top-15 scalp, beating Korea’s top-ranked player and World No. 14 Jang Woojin 3-2 (5-11,11-9,5-11,11-9,11-7) in their men’s singles Rd of 32 clash of Asian Championship on Saturday. In what was a stunning display of backhand attack, Manav didn’t allow Woojin to settle into the match after the Korean took the first game 5-11. The 24-year-old from Surat looked a bit nervy in the opening game but came back in stunning fashion to take the third 11-9. The Korean, who reached the semifinal of the Saudi Smash, bounced back to take the third, but that was all Manav, who is in incredible form, was going to give him. Woojin led the fourth 5-4, but Manav called for a very smart timeout and the game just changed on its head after that. Coach Massimo Costantini, who was sitting on Manav’s bench appeared to be telling the Indian to attack more on Woojin’s backhand before unleashing a forehand across the table. And that’s exactly what Manav did. He kept …
