3 min readChandigarhJul 12, 2026 04:57 PM IST Days after a seven-year-old boy in Bhiwani accidentally strangled himself while playing with his elder brother’s school tie, the Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Friday urged all schools to discontinue the use of conventional neckties as a mandatory part of school uniforms. The directive applies immediately to all government, government-aided, private, and recognised institutions. Commission Chairperson Tripti confirmed the advisory, telling The Indian Express that similar incidents had previously been reported in Haryana’s Sonipat and in parts of Rajasthan. “Sometimes, fatal accidents happen when children, while playing in a light mood, casually pick up these neckties,” she said. The advisory stated, “Where a necktie is considered necessary to maintain uniformity or discipline, schools should adopt clip‑on (breakaway) or Velcro (quick‑release) neckties.” It further said, “Until such alternatives are adopted, schools should ensure that conventional neckties are not worn during sports, physical education classes, playground activities or any other activity involving a risk of entanglement.” The Commission also directed schools to sensitise teachers, students, and …

Enrolment in government schools fell by nearly 86 lakh between 2023-24 and 2025-26 while private unaided recognised schools added more than 88 lakh students during the same period, according to the UDISE 2025-26 report released by the Ministry of Education on 7 July. UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) is the Centre’s official digital database for the education sector. Maintained by the Ministry of Education, it collates real-time statistics on school infrastructure, student enrolment, and teacher metrics. 11.89 cr enrolments in Govt schools 2025-26 The total enrolment from foundational to secondary level stood at 24.72 crore in 2025-26, compared with 24.80 crore in 2023-24 – a decline of about 8.26 lakh. But enrolment in government schools fell from 12.75 crore to 11.89 crore, while for private unaided recognised schools it rose from 9 crore to 9.89 crore, according to the report. Vasai taluka recorded the highest downpour at 203.0 mm, followed by Wada at 180.6 mm, Palghar at 164.6 mm, and Dahanu at 103.1 mm. “A total of 286 families from hamlets near Zanzroli dam region, including Mandal Pada, Devshet Pada, and Dhondal Pada, were shifted to secure locations. In other flood-prone areas, an additional 491 citizens were relocated, including 195 from Chandrapada–Wakipada in Vasai, 65 from Kaman–Bhendipada–Morigaon, 76 from Arnala, and 56 from Tembhi,” Collector Indu Rani Jakhar said. IMD has issued a red alert for the Pune District and predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated regions. The order says that, considering the forecast of heavy rainfall and the safety of citizens, all Anganwadis as well as primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools (across all mediums) in Pune City and Pune District (Rural) will remain closed on July 6. This decision has been taken by prioritizing student safety, he said.
