‘Leo didn’t come because the president didn’t want him’: Xavi says Lionel Messi’s Barcelona comeback in 2023 was scrapped by Joan Laporta | Football News

3 min readMar 9, 2026 08:22 PM IST Former Barcelona player and coach Xavi Hernandez said that Lionel Messi‘s return to Camp Nou was almost a done deal in 2023 but the club’s president Joan Laporta had blocked the Argentinian’s transfer fearing a power struggle with the superstar. Messi would ultimately end up joining his current club Inter Miami in 2023 after his Paris Saint Germain tenure ended. “The president is lying about what happened with Messi. Leo was signed. In January of 2023, after he had won the World Cup, I spoke to him and he told me he was excited to learn. We spoke until March and I told him: ‘Once you give me the OK, I will tell the president because it works perfectly on a football level,” Xavi said to Spanish outlet La Vanguardia as per ESPN. “The president negotiated the contract with Leo’s dad and we had the green light from La Liga financially, but it’s the president who pulled out. ‘Have security concerns or whatever concerns about visiting a country…they should be scrapped’

2 min readUpdated: Jan 29, 2026 11:01 PM IST Did ICC do right by removing Bangladesh from the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup? Former English cricketer Mark Butcher said that this should be the “precedent” and something which has to be followed going forward when the team does not want to travel into the host nation of the ICC tournament. “The ICC had a choice to make at that point – do they do what actually should happen from now on in? This is a precedent that I think is worth following, that when a team – whether it’s through their government or it’s off their own bat – have security concerns or whatever concerns about visiting a country for a tournament, then basically they should be scrapped and the next cab off the rank qualifies and you go ahead without them. That I think is the precedent,” Butcher said on the Wisden podcast. The 53-year-old also took the example of India from last year, when the side did not travel to Pakistan for the …

Arbitral award can be scrapped if delay taints decision-making, SC rules

The Supreme Court has held that an arbitral award may be set aside if an undue and unexplained delay in its delivery has a demonstrable adverse impact on the tribunal’s decision-making and results in material lapses. Even though delay alone is not an independent ground to strike down an award under the law, the ruling clarified that such delay can nonetheless vitiate the award if it undermines its quality, reasoning or fairness. Absolute faith, the bench noted in a recent judgment, is central to alternative dispute resolution, …
