The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has won a total of 102 seats across Kerala, including in two corporations, one block panchayat, eight municipalities, and 91 grama panchayats in the recently concluded three-tier local body elections. Addressing the media here, SDPI State president C.P. Abdul Latheef said the party was expected to play a crucial role in the formation of administrations in 16 grama panchayats. The SDPI finished second in 277 wards and lost in over 50 wards by narrow margins. It has opened accounts in Kannur Corporation, Thalassery and Ponnani municipalities, and 19 grama panchayats. Mr. Latheef alleged that the Congress-led UDF and the CPI(M)-led LDF had joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to counter the SDPI, and alleged that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) had openly sought the BJP’s help in many places.
