Major tragedy averted as SDRF rescues over 50 stranded devotees at Reetha Sahib Gurudwara fair

More than 50 devotees had a narrow escape on Sunday as they headed to Gurudwara Shri Reetha Sahib during the ongoing ‘Jod Mela’ in Uttarakhand; however, the vigilant disaster teams averted the tragedy by swiftly mounting a timely operation to rescue all of them.  The incident occurred at the historic Shri Reetha Sahib Gurudwara in Champawat district, where Sikh devotees had arrived in droves to participate in the three-day annual fair, held to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev’s historic visit. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system moved nearly northwards at around 5 kmph over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coastline, maintaining its intensity as it inched closer to the mainland. As of 11:30 pm on 29 November, the cyclonic storm was centred near latitude 10.7°N and longitude 80.6°E. As part of the Ministry of Home Affairs` initiative for nationwide civil defence preparedness, personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conducted a mock drill at Dal Lake, Srinagar, focusing on a boat capsize scenario on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI. Speaking to ANI, an SDRF personnel, Arif Hussain, said, “Yesterday we received an order to do a mock drill regarding boat capsize… We will demonstrate how to use our equipment. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the state-of-the-art State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) which aims to use new technology effectively for disaster management. “Due to climate change, the nature, intensity and frequency of disasters are changing. Therefore, it is necessary to emphasise on ‘mitigation’ and immediate response after incidents. It is important to have a strong ‘command and communication system’ for disaster management, and this center will be useful for taking decisions quickly and providing quick response,” said Fadnavis. The new SEOC includes bezel-free video wall, high capacity audio visual conferencing, data servers, high-speed computers, satellite phone, ham radios, LED video walls  and wireless sets, which can be used for timely response and coordination among all the systems during a disaster. This, according to the officials heading the rescue operation, was done to speed up the work as the operation entered 22nd day on Saturday. A portion of the tunnel collapsed on February 22.
