Jothi Ramalingam Tiruvallur authorities have declared a 500-metre radius around a private seafood processing plant at Kannigaipair village as a restricted zone ahead of a planned ammonia removal operation scheduled for July 4 and 5. An ammonia leak from the said plant on June 21 has killed 18 migrant workers so far. According to the district administration, a team of technical experts will carry out the controlled removal of ammonia gas from the plant as part of a safety exercise. As a precaution, all occupants of private factories, shops, schools, and residential buildings located within a 300-metre radius of the plant were evacuated to safer locations by 6 p.m. on Friday. Joseph Vijay on Sunday has ordered the formation of a three-member inquiry committee to probe the incident. The Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Member-Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), and Additional Director of Public Health will be part of the committee, and they will submit their interim report in 24 hours, with a final report set to follow in three days. In a statement, the Chief Minister said a total of 60 women and four men who were on duty at the factory were affected due to the gas leak. He said two women lost their lives, while the rest are being treated in the intensive care units of government and private hospitals. At least seven workers were killed and several others hospitalised after a suspected ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district on Sunday, officials told news agency IANS. The incident occurred at a private seafood processing facility in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam, where a large number of migrant workers from Assam, Odisha, and Jharkhand were employed. Many workers also resided within the factory premises. According to officials, around 120 workers, including women, were present at the facility when the leak reportedly originated from the unit’s refrigeration or processing system and spread through parts of the premises. Workers exposed to the gas complained of breathing difficulties, dizziness, and irritation, triggering panic at the facility. Several workers rushed out in search of safety, while others collapsed after inhaling the suspected toxic fumes. According to government data, 64 workers, including 60 women and four men, were affected by the incident. India’s seafood exports hit record Rs 73,890 crore in FY26: Export authority

India’s seafood exports reached an all-time high in both volume and value during 2025-26, highlighting the sector’s resilience amid uncertain global trade conditions and strengthening the country’s position as a key supplier in international markets, IANS reported.  According to the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), India exported 19.72 lakh metric tonnes of seafood during the fiscal year, valued at Rs 73,890 crore (USD 8.46 billion), marking the highest-ever performance by the sector. Announcing the figures, MPEDA Chairman P. Jawahar said the record growth was achieved despite several global challenges, including volatile demand patterns and market uncertainties, the news agency reported.  Frozen shrimp remains top export product Frozen shrimp continued to dominate India’s seafood export basket, accounting for more than two-thirds of total export earnings. Shrimp exports generated Rs 49,038 crore (USD 5.62 billion), contributing 66.5 per cent of the total foreign exchange earnings from seafood exports.
