US envoy Witkoff calls Ukraine, Russia talks productive | World News

Talks held between US, European and Ukrainian officials over the last three days in Florida aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine focused on aligning positions, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said on Sunday, calling those meetings and separate talks with Russian negotiators productive. US President Donald Trump has been pressuring Ukraine and Russia to come to an agreement on ending the nearly four-year-old conflict as soon as possible, but Russia wants to keep the Ukrainian ‍areas it has seized and Kyiv has refused to cede ground. After meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev on Saturday, Witkoff and Trump adviser Jared Kushner met on Sunday with officials from Ukraine and Europe, and then separately with the Ukrainian delegation, led by senior official Rustem Umerov. Witkoff, in a social media post, called Sunday’s talks “productive and constructive” and focused on a “shared strategic approach between Ukraine, the United States and Europe. “In a separate X post that used ‌some of the same language, Witkoff said his talks with Dmitriev were also “productive and …

Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirms his refusal to cede land to Russia as he rallies European support | World News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reaffirmed his strong refusal to cede any territory, resisting US pressure for painful concessions to Russia as he moved ahead Tuesday to rally more European support for his country. “Undoubtedly, Russia insists for us to give up territories. We, clearly, don’t want to give up anything. That’s what we are fighting for,” Zelenskyy told reporters in a WhatsApp chat late Monday. “Do we consider ceding any territories? According to the law we don’t have such right,” he said. “According to Ukraine’s law, our constitution, international law, and to be frank, we don’t have a moral right either.” In an interview with Politico released Tuesday, US President Donald Trump pressed Zelenskyy to accept the US proposal that Ukraine cede territory to Russia, arguing Moscow has the “upper hand” in its nearly 4-year-old invasion, and that Zelenskyy’s government must “play ball”. Zelenskyy met in Rome with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, discussing the progress of the peace process, her office said. They emphasised the importance of US and European unity and of solutions …

(Gianluigi Guercia/Pool Photo via AP) French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday a peace plan submitted by the US to end the war between Ukraine and Russia was a good basis for work but needed to be revisited, taking the Europeans on board. “There is a peace plan that has emerged, which incorporates ideas that are quite familiar, whether they were shared or not. It’s good in that it proposes peace and recognizes important elements on issues of sovereignty, security guarantees,” he told reporters at a meeting of the G20 in South Africa. “But it’s a basis for work that needs to be revisited, as we did last summer, because this plan, first of all, wasn’t negotiated with the Europeans,” he said. “Yet, it stipulates many things for the Europeans. Frozen assets are held by Europeans. The European integration of Ukraine is in the hands …
