Supreme Court clears way for Trump administration to revive restrictive policy for asylum seekers | World News

The Supreme Court cleared the way Thursday for the Trump administration to potentially revive an immigration policy once used to turn back migrants seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border. The justices, in a 6-3 decision, overturned a lower court order blocking the practice that limited the number of people who could apply for asylum each day, first under the Obama administration and then expanded during President Donald Trump’s first term. Advocates said the tactic created a humanitarian crisis as thousands of people settled in unsafe makeshift shelters to await their turn. The Trump administration said it was necessary to deal with an increase of asylum seekers at the border. The policy isn’t in place now, though authorities have imposed other restrictions on asylum seekers. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. The administration argued that metering is a critical tool that’s been used by presidents of both parties and should stay available. Federal attorneys say people turned away at the border could come back later, though lines were …

‘Human impact will be massive’: Congress leader flags concerns over new US policy for Green Card seekers

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Shukla on Saturday expressed concern over the recent change in immigration policy affecting foreign nationals applying for a Green Card in the US. The United States issues more than one million Green Cards every year. (Unsplash/Representational Image) The announcement by US citizenship and immigration services (USCIS) said that foreign nationals staying in the US on a temporary basis and wanting to become lawful permanent residents, commonly known as Green Card holders, would need to leave the country and apply from their place of origin. The only exception would be in “extraordinary circumstances”, and USCIS officials would decide whether applicants qualify under those conditions. However, the US later rolled back certain parts of the policy, offering relief to international professionals, including Indian workers. Rajeev Shukla says ‘human impact will be massive’ In a statement posted on X, the Congress leader expressed concerns over the recent immigration policy shift adopted by the US. ‘Want students to become job creators, not just job seekers’

Professor Susan Elias was appointed the first woman principal of St Stephen’s College in New Delhi, a first in its 145-year history. HT’s Gargi Shukla reached out to Elias to discuss her appointment. Edited excerpts: Professor Susan Elias was appointed the first woman principal of St Stephen’s College in New Delhi, a first in its 145-year history. What does being appointed the first woman principal of St Stephen’s mean to you? I definitely feel excited to head such a premier institution, but I do not necessarily believe that my gender played a major role in the selection process. I was asked several questions related to research, artificial intelligence (AI), and technology, which made it clear to me that the institution was looking for someone with a strong academic and technological background, irrespective of gender. They would have selected anyone who best matched those requirements. Perhaps my 15 years of experience in AI and related research areas contributed significantly to my selection. I have led many projects over the last decade, but becoming the first woman …

An effort to seek attention of asylum seekers and pressurise India: BJP minister Bittu on India-Canada situation | Chandigarh News

An effort to seek attention of asylum seekers and pressurise India: BJP minister Bittu on India-Canada situation | Chandigarh News

The strained relationship between India and Canada has persisted for over a year, with tensions intensifying after both nations withdrew diplomats and India faced accusations of involvement in criminal activities on Canadian soil. BJP minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, from Punjab, stressed the primacy of national interest in a conversation with The Indian Express. What is your take on the current situation between India and Canada? As a politician, I believe Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is trying to gain the attention of asylum seekers and hardliners by issuing various statements against India. The investigation into Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s case was ongoing, and India has been cooperating. I don’t see why Canada needed to make public statements on this matter. I believe that, in September, National Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh withdrew support from Trudeau’s Liberal Party, and since then, Trudeau seems to be trying to woo asylum seekers and hardliners, many of whom are pro-NDP. Though some may not be voters, they work for the parties and campaign for them, acting as a hidden …

At least 28 people from Tamil Nadu were deployed at different platforms of the New Delhi Railway Station every day for eight hours for a month to count the arrival and departure of trains and their coaches, unaware they were victims of an employment scam. They had been told that this was part of their training for positions of travel ticket examiner (TTE), traffic assistants and clerks, and each of them paid amounts ranging between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 24 lakh to get the jobs in the Railways, according to a complaint filed with the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW). For the one-month training which took place between June and July, the victims were duped of Rs 2.67 crore by a group of fraudsters, according to the complaint lodged by 78-year-old M Subbusamy. Subbusamy, an ex-serviceman, had put the victims in touch with the alleged fraudsters, but he has claimed that he was unaware that the entire thing was a scam and he too had fallen for their trap. “Each candidate paid money …
