A self-styled Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander was killed on Wednesday in an anti-terror operation by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, police said. A man claiming to be a “healer” and his associate have allegedly cheated a businessman from Thane in Maharashtra of ₹56.2 lakh under the pretext of providing him a herbal treatment for his ailments, police said on Sunday. Out of fear, the victim paid ₹20,000 in cash and later transferred various amounts in instalments, totalling ₹56.2 lakh, but the accused continued demanding more money. But the victim did not experience any improvement in his health after consuming the medicines. The accused later called the victim to Gaimukh Chowpatty on Ghodbunder Road in the city and allegedly forced him to consume a medicine mixed with various herbal substances, an official from Kasarvadavali police station said. The accused then claimed that the cost of the treatment was ₹56 lakh and allegedly threatened the victim with dire consequences if he failed to pay. A court in Nashik on Friday remanded self-styled godman Ashok Kharat to police custody till Sunday in the sixth case of sexual exploitation registered against him, news agency PTI reported. Kharat, who was arrested on March 18, is accused of sexually exploiting several women and committing large-scale financial fraud by claiming to possess divine powers and knowledge of black magic. In the sixth case, the former Merchant Navy officer allegedly sexually exploited a young woman who had approached him seeking solutions to her personal problems. Police said Kharat allegedly threatened the woman, warning her that he would use his “divine powers” to destroy her family. He also allegedly collected Aadhaar, PAN card and other documents of her family members. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing 12 cases of sexual exploitation and financial fraud registered against Kharat in Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts, had on Thursday filed an application before the court seeking his custody in the sixth case. Self-styled godman Ashok Kharat remanded to jail custody till April 30

A court in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on Saturday sent self-styled godman Ashok Kharat to judicial custody till April 30 in connection with a fourth case of alleged sexual assault and exploitation of a woman, reported PTI. Kharat is already under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing multiple cases of sexual assault and financial fraud against him. Custody handed over to jail authorities Earlier, Kharat was in SIT custody in this case till April 18. After his custody period ended, he was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) B N Ichpurani. Due to security concerns, the court proceedings were conducted through video conferencing and Kharat was not physically present in the courtroom. A brief technical issue also delayed the hearing. Following the prosecution’s request, the court ordered judicial custody and directed that he be sent to Nashik Road Central Jail, as per PTI reports. The victim was later rescued by her family members from the spot, following which they approached the police.
