The Goa government on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking enhancement of the sentence handed down to journalist Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 sexual assault case. On August 6, Tejpal was convicted of rape and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years by the Bombay High Court, overturning the verdict of the trial court which had acquitted the former editor of Tehelka five years ago. In a petition filed in the apex court, the Goa government said that the sentence pronounced by the high court was “grossly disproportionate to the nature and gravity of the offences” committed by Tejpal. “The present case warrants enhancement of sentence to imprisonment for life, or such enhanced sentence as this court may deem appropriate, and the sentences ought not to have been directed to run concurrently,” the plea said. In its verdict, the high court had termed the trial court”s 2021 order as “perverse”, noting that it fell for the notion that a sexual assault complainant must be a “perfect victim” and conduct herself in a certain way so …

A Delhi court on Monday reserved its order on the quantum of sentence to be imposed on former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four others convicted in the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots.  Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Praveen Singh of the Karkardooma Court said it would pronounce the order on July 31 after hearing detailed submissions from the prosecution and the defence on the question of sentence.  Seeking the maximum punishment, Delhi Police urged the court to award the death penalty, describing Sharma’s killing as a “cold-blooded” and “brutal” murder, arguing that the 51 injuries found on his body reflected the extreme brutality of the assault.  The prosecution argued that those now seeking mercy had shown none to the victim, claiming that no one attempted to take Sharma to a hospital after the assault. “Those who want mercy should also show mercy. They have no evidence to show that any mercy was shown by any person to carry this person to a hospital,” …
