Sergio Gor calls India-US trade talks report 'fake', says talks continue

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Monday dismissed a media report claiming that India had rejected a quick trade agreement with the United States, asserting that negotiations between the two countries remain active and constructive. The remarks came after a Reuters report suggested that India had declined to move forward with a fast-tracked trade deal during recent discussions with the US. Both Indian and US officials have rejected the claim, saying negotiations are continuing. Don’t care about name on letterhead: Sergio Gor on Indo-Pacific command row

U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor dismissed the row over the renaming of the Indo-Pacific Command, saying the “name on the letterhead” does not matter, but rather, look at what America is actually doing. Addressing the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit on Monday (June 29, 2026), Mr. Gor said India still conducts more military exercises with the U.S. than any other country and has regular bilateral visits of defence officials. Mr. Gor’s remarks came in the wake of a row over dropping ‘Indo’ from the Indo-Pacific Command. Established in 1947, the U.S. Pacific Command is among the oldest unified commands of the U.S. that extend from the West Coast of the U.S. to India’s western border. During U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term, the Pacific Command was renamed the Indo-Pacific Command, citing the growing importance of India in the Indo-Pacific region. Earlier this month the U.S. restored the original name of the unified command. “I just want to mention something because a lot of individuals made hay over a name change. I don’t care …

File | Photo Credit: The Hindu The U.S.-India trade deal is in its “final steps”, with only the last one per cent of negotiations left to be concluded, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), expressing confidence that the deal would soon be sealed after nearly 18 months of talks. Addressing the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit in Washington, Mr. Gor said he was determined to conclude the agreement as it would be beneficial to both nations. “We are in the final steps on this deal. Most of this deal is complete. There’s a few items that remain on both sides. It’s in the last 1% of that deal,” he said. The U.S. envoy to India was bullish about the bilateral relationship and cited the personal equation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi which was driving the ties. “People ask, why is this taking so long? We’ve been at this for a year and a half. To put it …
