New Delhi, Various organisations and a group of former civil servants have expressed concern regarding Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s recent comments about people approaching the courts regarding environmental litigations. Various organisations, former civil servants oppose CJI’s environmental activists comment A Bench comprising the CJI and Joymalya Bagchi on May 11 had said, “Show us even a single project in this country where these alleged environmental activists have said that we welcome this project.” The observations were made during the hearing of a matter concerning the expansion of Pipavav Port in Gujarat. In an open letter addressed to the CJI, the individuals and organisations on Friday demanded a retraction of the court’s observations. It said, “The comments risk being understood as casting bona fide environmental scrutiny and public-interest litigation as reflexively ‘anti-development’.” The letter also said that such framing is “factually inaccurate, constitutionally troubling, and potentially dangerous”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written letters to over a crore civil servants telling them that the principle of ‘Nagrikdevo Bhava‘ (citizen is god) must be at the heart of every decision and the government must serve the people to the best of its abilities. The Prime Minister also conveyed to the civil servants that governance must be grounded in compassion and that those who bear the responsibility of public service must themselves be the finest examples of lifelong learning. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the suspected role public servants in the large-scale smuggling of gold from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India, based on the inputs shared by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which recently arrested Kannada actor Ranya Rao allegedly with smuggled gold. According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered by the CBI, the DRI complaint provide details of the two foreigners, an Omani and a UAE national, arrested at Mumbai international airport while allegedly attempting to smuggle in 21.28 kg of gold worth Rs.18.92 crore, on March 6. They had come from Dubai. The agency alleged that the two accused have previously arrived at Mumbai airport multiple times. In the complaint, the agency also gave details about an “Indian lady passenger” coming from Dubai who was intercepted at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru on March 3, when she was allegedly attempting to smuggle in 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs.12.56 crore. and was arrested. 173 public servants investigated for graft since 2012 yet to be suspended, says ACB report

Representative image | Photo Credit: PTI As many as 173 public servants across Maharashtra are yet to be suspended despite allegations and investigations against them in graft cases since 2012, a report by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has stated. According to the report released on Saturday, 30 Class I officials, 29 Class II, 106 Class III and eight officials of Class IV were investigated for corruption from January 1, 2012, till January 31 this year and have not been suspended. The highest number of 46 cases were registered in the Mumbai range, followed by Thane with 38, Aurangabad with 22, Pune with 18, Nashik with 16, Nagpur with 12, Amravati with 11, and Nanded with 10, the report stated. The education and sports departments have the highest number of pending suspensions at 41, the Urban Development-II (Municipal Councils and Corporations) has 36 cases, and police, jail, and home guards have 25. The report further highlights that 22 public servants convicted in corruption cases were still awaiting dismissal, with the majority of them belonging to Class-III …
