‘No water’ warning works as PMRDA revives defunct sewage treatment plant (STP)

‘No water’ warning works as PMRDA revives defunct sewage treatment plant (STP)

A year after it was flagged by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA )’s defunct Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has finally started functioning. This followed the PCMC’s initiation of action to disconnect the building’s water supply due to the non-functional plant. The building is PMRDA’s head office, which has been awarded a “green building” certificate. On May 8, mid-day highlighted the irony of a government building not meeting one of the most basic codes. ESR flags major gaps in sewage treatment; Pashan STP failure puts PMC claims under scrutiny

ESR flags major gaps in sewage treatment; Pashan STP failure puts PMC claims under scrutiny

Even as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) claims to treat a substantial share of the city’s sewage, its Environment Status Report (ESR) 2024–25 highlights major gaps in collection and treatment. The issue has come under renewed scrutiny after a sewage treatment plant (STP) near Pashan Lake failed, leading to untreated discharge and fish deaths. While PMC operates STPs with a combined capacity of 567 MLD and a sewage network exceeding 2,600 km, the report points to inefficiencies across the system. (MAHENDRA KOLHE/ HT) The ESR estimates Pune generates about 980 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, of which only 64% is treated before being released into water bodies. While PMC operates STPs with a combined capacity of 567 MLD and a sewage network exceeding 2,600 km, the report points to inefficiencies across the system. Service benchmarks show 95% network coverage, but only 64% of sewage is actually collected, indicating leakages and gaps. Treatment capacity also stands at 64% of total sewage generated, reflecting inadequate infrastructure. Only the quality of treated sewage meets prescribed standards. These …

Residents of Sector 67 raise sewage woes

Gurugram: Residents of Sector 67 have alleged that sewage leakage in their sector has caused waterlogging on the main road near Ansal Esencia society, causing inconvenience for both pedestrians and commuters. Sewage leaking led to serious difficulties for pedestrians and daily commuters in Sector 67 near Ansal Esencia Society (HT) According to residents, the problem has been persisting for more than a year. The lane connecting with Ramgarh Village is waterlogged throughout the year. “Ramgarh Village’s sewage pipeline does not have the capacity to handle the sewage flow,” said Jatin Rao, RWA member. “As a result, it overflows, causing waterlogging along the lane. The lanenear Ansal Esencia societyis unusable most of the time.” Residents said that the society lacks a sewage treatment plant (STP), as it was never installed. “We have to rely on water tankers and other temporary measures to manage the situation,” said Rao. “Without a proper STP, managing sewage becomes a challenge, and we are forced to rely on temporary methods to dispose of the wastewater,” said Manoj Kumar, another resident. (HT File Photo) Union minister of state for housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) Tokhan Sahu made the announcements while responding to a question by Congress MP Sanjna Jatav on MoHUA’s awareness regarding STPs that primarily focus on treating wastewater to a level suitable for discharge into water bodies without harming the environment rather than purifying it for the drinking purposes. Sahu said that MoHUA also launched ‘Jal Hi AMRIT’ initiative under AMRUT 2.0 to incentivise states and UTs to efficiently …
