The Deputy Commissioner of Mandya, Kumar, directed officials in the district to take appropriate measures to stop the flow of untreated sewage into the Cauvery river. He chaired a meeting in Mandya on Monday (November 24) after the Upalokayukta filed a suo motu case upon observing that wastewater from the town has been flowing into the Cauvery near the Wellesley Bridge in Srirangapatna. Dr. Kumar said that a committee has been constituted and accorded the responsibility of constructing a barrier across the the river near Wellesley Bridge point so that sewage does not enter it. He noted that sewage from Srirangapatna town flows from Rampal Road in the northern part towards Chikkahole (water gate), runs alongside agricultural land, and then reaches Wellesley Bridge from Biddakote before eventually entering the Cauvery. ‘’A barrier near the water gate at Wellesley Bridge can help prevent this contaminated water from mixing with the river,’’ he added. New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal has sought reasons as to why sewage treatment plants (STPs) remain non-functional and effluents continue to pollute Ganga in Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. The southern Bench of the NGT stressed the importance of protecting the eco-sensitive and biodiverse coast of the Gulf of Mannar. The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal has instructed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to take urgent action against the release of untreated sewage into the Gulf of Mannar. Hearing a suo motu case on the issue of sewage discharge off the Ramanathapuram coast, Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana on Monday referred to TNPCB’s report that stated that the Keelakarai municipality generates 3.25 mld of sewage.Its fecal sludge treatment plant has a capacity of only 18 kld, and its Consent to Establish was valid until 31 March 2024, the report said. The TNPCB also reported that, following recommendations from the District Environmental Engineer, a notice was issued to the Commissioner of the Keelakarai municipality to take necessary steps to establish a new sewage treatment plant.
