Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and advocate Priyanka Tibrewal in a letter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged, “acts of violence, intimidation by the police and local politicians against victims of sexual violence in Sandeshkhali area.” “Local administration of Sandeshkhali including the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, North 24 Parganas, failed and neglected to install CCTV cameras in the sensitive areas of Sandeshkhali, as recorded by the order… passed by the Hon’ble High Court,” Tibrewal wrote in her letter. The Central Bureau of Investigation Thursday lodged a First Information Report (FIR) to probe the land grabbing and sexual harassment allegations in Sandeshkhali. In the FIR, the central probe agency has named five people. This comes weeks after the CBI had taken over the probe into the January 5 attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali, as well as custody of main accused Shahjahan Sheikh. Sandeshkhali, in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, had been at the centre of BJP-TMC politics since January 5, when ED officials were assaulted while conducting a search at the home of Sheikh, a local strongman and TMC leader. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday questioned suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh in the Basirhat Correctional Home in connection with cases involving land grabbing and financial irregularities in Sandeshkhali, an official said. Sheikh, who is currently in judicial custody, was also “shown arrested” after he allegedly did not cooperate with the central agency officials during questioning. Even when a person is in judicial custody, he can be shown arrested in respect of any number of other crimes registered elsewhere. “He has been non-cooperative when our officers questioned him inside the jail this afternoon. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has constituted a team of experts to conduct a study of the lands in Sandeshkhali that were illegally grabbed from villagers and turned into fish farms, and suggest ways to utilise them, an official in the Raj Bhavan said. Experts in the field have told PTI that the topsoil of the farmlands allegedly snatched by suspended TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and now returned to the original owners have become unfit for agriculture due to the draining of saline water for fish farming, and the topsoil needs to be replaced to make those lands suitable for cultivation again. The West Bengal Police on Saturday arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad member Shiba Prasad Hazra, against whom a section of women of Sandeshkhali had lodged a complaint of sexual harassment. The development comes on a day when the police added IPC Sections 376D (gang rape) and 307 (attempt to murder) against Hazra and former TMC leader Uttam Sardar, who was arrested last week.
