Shai Hope Delivers as West Indies Seals 7-Wicket Victory Against Sri Lanka

A resilient knock from Shai Hope set up West Indies to post a 7-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in the 1st T20I match played at Kingston. His unbeaten 65* runs off 54 deliveries has put the hosts on a 1-0 lead in the T20I series of Sri Lanka tour of West Indies 2026. After choosing to bat first, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis opened the innings while Akeal Hosein opened the bowling attack. The duo forged a 43-run partnership for the 1st wicket before the dismissal of Pathum Nissanka for 18 runs. Lasith Croospulle, who came to bat no.3, got dismissed on a golden duck as Jason Holder bagged his second wicket. With the dismissal of Pavan Rathnayake for 4 runs, Sri Lanka lost three wickets for 49 runs within the power play. Frustrated Shai Hope after West Indies’ T20 World Cup exit

4 min readMar 2, 2026 06:56 PM IST After playing fighting cricket throughout the last three weeks, the West Indies were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026 after suffering a five-wicket loss to India in the Super 8 match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, where Indian opener Sanju Samson slammed a blistering 50-ball 97. In what was a virtual quarterfinal clash against the hosts India, the visitors put up a competitive 195 runs on the board after being asked to bat first. West Indies went with a different opening pair, with skipper Shai Hope partnering Roston Chase at the top, dropping Brandon King. While Chase ensured a confident start for the visitors, it was Hope who struggled against the Indian attack with the new ball. He managed 32 off 33 balls, with his strike rate below 100 in a must-win game. However, fighting knocks from Jason Holder and Rovman Powell helped West Indies reach 195. The target proved insufficient against Samson, who played one of the greatest knocks in a chase, …

‘Have to ensure that we play better cricket’, says Shai Hope as West Indies ponder changes ahead of crucial India clash in T20 World Cup | Cricket News

3 min readFeb 27, 2026 02:47 PM IST Their winning streak ended by a nine-wicket drubbing against South Africa, the West Indies are now pondering on how to regroup ahead of the winner-takes-all match against India in Kolkata on Sunday. With the Proteas safely through to the last-four stage, the game at the Eden Gardens has taken the proportions of a virtual quarterfinal and West Indies skipper Shai Hope believes that’s how it’s meant to be. “I wouldn’t say it’s a difficult road. I would say this is how it’s supposed to be because when you come into crunch time in a tournament, every opposition or every game you play now is supposed to be a challenge,” Hope was quoted as saying after Thursday’s defeat in Ahmedabad. “This is the reason it’s the Super Eights, and then if you get to the semis and the finals, there is a reason why because they are the best teams in the latter stages of the tournament,” “I wouldn’t say it’s anything to jump out the boat but …

Shai Hope Admits South Africa Hold Edge in Ahmedabad Clash

3 min readFeb 24, 2026 08:58 AM IST West Indies captain Shai Hope acknowledged that South Africa could hold an advantage in Ahmedabad, where they have been based for large parts of the ongoing T20 World Cup, but said his side would back themselves to adapt quickly when the teams meet in their next Super 8 clash on Thursday. South Africa have played most of their games at the Narendra Modi Stadium, something Hope admitted can help teams become more familiar with conditions over a short tournament. “It’s certainly a factor,” Hope said at the post-match presentation. “When you play in a venue for so many games in a short span, you would have an advantage. That’s reality. But it won’t deter us from what we’re trying to do. We’ll still play the same cricket and assess the conditions as quickly as we can.” Hope pointed out that many players in the West Indies squad have previous experience playing in Ahmedabad through franchise tournaments and international matches, which should help them adjust. “We’ve played there …

After the bowlers had set up the contest with a disciplined showing in the first innings, captain Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer finished off the chase of 134 runs with a 91-run stand for the second wicket, which also ensured that Nepal’s search for the elusive first win would now stretch into its final league phase match against Scotland at the same venue on Tuesday. West Indies vs Nepal, T20 World Cup 2026 Highlights: West Indies defeat Nepal by 9 wickets to secure Super 8 spot Holder shines Hope had said at the toss that the reason to bowl first was the dampness on the surface. ‘Sometimes you’ve got to throw stats out the window’: Shai Hope backs Sherfane Rutherford after match-turning 76 against England at T20 World Cup | Cricket News

3 min readFeb 12, 2026 09:05 AM IST For all the talk about numbers in modern T20 cricket, Shai Hope believes some players defy statistical judgement. After Sherfane Rutherford’s decisive 76 off 42 balls helped the West Indies beat England by 30 runs, at the Wankhede Stadium, the captain made it clear that impact matters more than averages. “Sometimes we’ve got to throw stats out the window,” Hope said at the post-match press conference. “If you ask any bowler in world cricket, if they see Sherfane Rutherford at the other end, they’re going to feel under pressure. That in itself speaks for itself.” Rutherford came into the game with modest T20 returns, his average hovering in the low 20s despite flashes of brilliance across franchise leagues. But on a surface that offered grip and demanded composure, his innings provided both momentum and stability at a crucial phase. Hope pointed to something deeper than numbers – preparation. “He’s always been a hard worker, especially with his batting. He’s very diligent with the way he goes about …

Shai Hope continues to pile on runs, breaks Indian captain’s record for most runs across format in 2025

West Indies may have been struggling as a collective unit this year, but their biggest batting hope, Shai Hope, remains a silver lining amidst their downfall. The famous draw against New Zealand in the first Test at Christchurch will be remembered for Justin Greaves’ gritty double century, but it was Shai Hope’s earlier century under adverse conditions that instilled the much-needed confidence in the remaining batters to punch above their weight. On Wednesday, Hope was again the mainstay for West Indies on Day 1 of the second Test at Wellington’s Basin Reserve. The side was bundled out for just 205, but Hope fought on from one end, scoring a crucial 48 runs. This innings also took him past Indian Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill to become the highest run-scorer across formats this year. Hope now has 1,749 runs from 47 innings across 41 matches in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is in 2025. With five centuries and nine fifties, he has surpassed Gill’s tally of 1,736 runs. Gill, who had a historic tour of England as …

Kraigg Brathwaite Steps Down As West Indies Test captain, Shai Hope Appointed T20I Skipper

File photo of Shai Hope© AFP St John’s (Antigua and Barbuda): Kraigg Brathwaite has stepped down as skipper of the West Indies Test team after four years in charge, Cricket West Indies (CWI) said on Monday after a shift in leadership roles saw Shai Hope taking over captaincy of the T20I side. Brathwaite, 32, was appointed as West Indies’ Test captain in place of Jason Holder in March 2021. Hope, who is also the team’s ODI skipper, replaced Rovman Powell for T20I captaincy. Powell has led the T20 side since May 2023. In a statement, CWI said, “Brathwaite wanted to ensure the team had a period of transition before his departure. As a result, he has submitted his resignation ahead of the home series against Australia, giving the new leadership time to establish itself. “This series will be particularly special, allowing Brathwaite, who is two matches shy of 100 Test matches, to double down on his batting without added responsibility.” A new Test captain will be announced shortly. The West Indies are scheduled to …
