The cricketing world may be going ga ga over Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips hundreds and Virat Kohli’s superb century in a losing cause, but former Pakistan cricketers Basit Ali and Kamran Akmal blamed the tactical moves by skipper Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir for India’s first-ever home ODI series defeat to New Zealand. Basit, in fact, described Gill’s calls as akin to what he has seen with his own national team, remarking: “Yeh to Shan Masood wali captaincy ki hai Gill ne.”The middle-order batsman of the 1990s was referring to the Indian skipper’s decision to bring on medium pacer Nitish Kumar Reddy before his spin trump card Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja. Former wicketkeeper-batter Akmal agreed. “A captain has to control the game. When you have got early wickets, you need to bring your specialist bowlers in the attack.
