Rohit Sharma becomes oldest Indian player to take part in an ODI

2 min readUpdated: Jun 13, 2026 05:32 PM IST Former India captain Rohit Sharma created history in the 1st ODI vs Afghanistan when he became the oldest India player to take part in a 50-over match on Saturday in Dharamsala. Rohit, who is currently aged 39 years and 44 days , leapfrogged Mohinder Amarnath who played an ODI when he was 39 years and 36 days. Rohit managed 61 runs in the last home series against New Zealand in January — three forced lofts, three soft dismissals in what felt like uncertain territory. Coupled with 283 runs in nine innings in the IPL season, it has only added fuel for the detractors. Judging the Rohit’s ODI heft solely by those returns would be preposterous. His boundary-hitting rhythm remained intact – 21 sixes and as many fours for Mumbai Indians this season. A factory line of fearless young openers in the IPL has pushed the limits of aggression. Dislodging Rohit in his most sublime format will still take some doing. The original ‘Hitman’ – world cricket’s …

Can Rohit Sharma play next year’s World Cup at 40? IND vs AFG series will give answers | Cricket News

Rohit Sharma is 39. Thirty-nine years and 44 days old when India meet Afghanistan in the first ODI in Dharamsala. He was also 20, in June 2007, when a quiet international debut slipped by in Belfast. He did not bat or bowl.On Saturday, the chatter when he walks out to bat could centre on longevity and greatness – he will become the oldest Indian man to feature in the one-day game. It could just as easily drift toward the question of when to stop. Is he stretching it too far? Can he carry himself through at 40 in the ODI World Cup in South Africa late next year? Has another modest IPL showing decoupled him from Virat Kohli in the veterans’ club? Kohli’s supreme scoring glut in the recent IPL season has insulated him from any speck of apprehension over India’s ODI No. 3 slot. A hamstring injury suffered in the IPL final has ruled Kohli out of the series, but Rohit cannot move through the upcoming months with the same assurance, despite recovering from …

PV Sindhu, Tanvi Sharma advance to quarterfinals

Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Tanvi Sharma reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 Australian Open Super500 Tournament in Sydney on Thursday. How did Rohit Sharma fare in nets as he returns to Indian team for Afghan ODIs

The temperature refused to drop below 40 degrees Celsius as Rohit Sharma checked in for national duty for the first time in five months at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday. The first ball from Nitish Kumar Reddy nipped back with some heat, hitting Rohit flush on the front pad. Conditions will be distinctly cooler when the 39-year-old marks a middle-stump guard again in two days, at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala during the first ODI against Afghanistan. There was no discernible lethargy in footwork, and no sign of the dodgy hamstring that caused concern during the recent IPL season. A few of his teammates had already braved the Chandigarh heat over the weekend during the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the new PCA Stadium. Returning to action after receiving the fitness clearance from BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, Rohit’s first hit stood in sharp contrast. While the other top-order batters unlocked full gung-ho mode in the optional session, Rohit exercised restraint during an hour-long stint. Minimal big hits from Rohit …
