Shashi Tharoor and ED Mathew write | Can the next UN chief revive global peace?

Dag Hammarskjöld, the United Nations’ second secretary-general, once offered what remains perhaps the clearest statement of the organisation’s purpose. The UN, he said, “was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell”. The remark reflected the hard lessons of the first half of the 20th century, when two world wars, genocide, imperial conquest and the horrors of the Holocaust and Hiroshima devastated much of the globe. The UN was never intended to create a perfect international order; it was designed to prevent the recurrence of such catastrophes. Eighty years after its founding, that mission looks increasingly precarious. Armed conflicts are multiplying. Nuclear risks have returned to strategic calculations. International law is under pressure, while the Security Council, the world’s principal instrument of collective security, is frequently paralysed by the rival interests of its permanent members. When cooperation is most needed, faith in multilateralism is ebbing as great-power rivalry thrives. Against this backdrop, the race to succeed António Guterres, whose term ends in December 2026, has assumed unusual significance. The next …

‘More interested in political points’: Shashi Tharoor vs Congress after he backs Modi-Trump meet at G7

Another rift between Shashi Tharoor and the Congress party erupted after Thiruvananthapuram MP expressed support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s remarks during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit. In response to Khera’s remarks, Shashi Tharoor posted a report regarding the issue of the safety of Indian seafarers being raised during the Modi-Trump meeting. (PTI) Hitting back at Congress leadership over criticism for his support of Modi’s remarks during his meeting with Trump, Tharoor said that some people are interested in “scoring political points”. The row sparked after the Thiruvananthapuram MP earlier said: “PM Modi made his point clear both in the public and private meetings with the president.” “It is important to convey the message that in wartime, civilian sailors on commercial ships should not be targets of combat. They are not soldiers, and that is the message PM Modi conveyed,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. Congress takes jibe at Shashi Tharoor In response to this, Congress’s Pawan Khera targeted Tharoor and stated that the leader’s …

‘US relations with Pakistan nothing to do with India’, says Shahi Tharoor, backs separate bilateral ties

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Friday that the United States’ ties with Pakistan are separate from its relationship with India, a position he said India also endorses. Shashi Thaoor noted that while Trump often praises Pakistan and its leaders, he also does not hesitate to speak positively about PM Narendra Modi. (PTI) While speaking of recent praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Donald Trump, Tharoor said the US President is conveying a message of “friendship and warmth” towards India. Speaking to PTI news agency, the Congress leader said, “I think Trump is definitely conveying a message of friendship and warmth towards India. You know, the Americans always like to say that our relations with Pakistan have nothing to do with our relations with India. And that’s also our view that there should be no hyphenation.” Tharoor added that India had conveyed to world leaders several years ago that any visit to New Delhi should be strictly bilateral and not combined with a visit to Pakistan. He said that US President Donald Trump also …
