Southern districts, once known as a laggard, seek to shed the bad image

As Tamil Nadu prepares for an electoral battle, its southern districts, once known as a laggard in the development process, are trying to shed the image stuck to them. Though it is too early to arrive at any conclusion about the lasting beneficial impact of the process, the region is getting much more attention in recent years than in the past. In the last eight months, two important developments took place in Thoothukudi district itself: the establishment of an electric vehicle manufacturing plant by VinFast and the commissioning of the first 660-MW supercritical thermal power plant established by Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation. Berthing bigger ships The Thoothukudi port, named after leading freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, has initiated the tendering process for the outer harbour project, the implementation of which will enable bigger vessels to get berthed at the port and help reduce the dependence on the Colombo harbour for trans-shipment. In fact, Ramanathapuram, considered a condemned district in the past for the posting of government officials, is one of the top 10 districts …

Candidates: Javokhir Sindarov’s red-hot form continues with fourth win, Pragg and Co now have to shed safety-first approach | Chess News

5 min readNew DelhiApr 4, 2026 12:08 AM IST In the history of the Candidates Tournament in its current format, no player had ever scored 3.5 points from the first four rounds. Uzbek sensation Javokhir Sindarov not only matched that mark but has gone one step ahead, surging to 4.5 points in five rounds while casually tearing down Hikaru Nakamura’s defences as if for fun in Cyprus on Friday. The 20-year-old, the youngest in the 8-player lineup, is toying with the world’s elite in what is widely considered the most brutal gauntlet in chess, the final step before a shot at the World Championship title. If his win against Fabiano Caruana in the previous round was a lesson in calculated domination, his game against Nakamura was an outright dismantling. Playing at the picturesque Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, perched above the deep blue Mediterranean, Sindarov made the extraordinary look routine to secure his fourth win. The colours don’t matter to Sindarov anymore. With all the stars aligning, he caught Nakamura in his …

Trump shares surprising letter imagining his own death amid Iran war: ‘Shed blood of…’

President Donald Trump released a statement on Truth Social, reflecting on his own mortality and questioning if he is “heaven bound” amid the US-Iran war. (Bloomberg) The POTUS posted an image of a last year letter from American evangelist Franklin Graham, who congratulated him on the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and subsequently stated that he is indeed destined for heaven in the afterlife. Trump has previously expressed thoughts regarding his potential fate in the afterlife, mentioning to reporters on Air Force One in October 2025 whether he would ultimately reach heaven. “I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to get me into heaven. I think I’m not maybe heaven-bound.” “I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make heaven, but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people” he added.
