Saurabh Chaudhary sets National Record, eyes return to National squad

Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary shot his way back into the spotlight by setting a new national record in the 10m air pistol event at the National Championship, which is underway at the Karni Singh Ranges in New Delhi, on Thursday. Chaudhary scored an impressive 591 in the qualification round, surpassing his previous record of 589 set in Osijek, Croatia, in 2021. Once considered a prime Olympic medal prospect, Chaudhary’s career hit a roadblock after a disappointing Tokyo Olympics performance and a subsequent shoulder injury. Determined to make a comeback, he adapted his technique and posture to overcome his injury. Speaking to PTI about his performance, Chaudhary said, “I have been practicing consistently, either at the National Centre of Excellence or my home range. This score is a significant step toward reclaiming my spot in the national squad after two years.” Although he has no specific goals for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Chaudhary remains focused on his training and performance. “I have not set any goals. My focus has always been on practice and improving …

How NRAI is plotting to transition the next batch of shooting prodigies at the senior level | Sport-others News

How NRAI is plotting to transition the next batch of shooting prodigies at the senior level | Sport-others News

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) wants to restart its junior shooting programme, that has found talents like Manu Bhaker and Divyansh Singh Panwar NRAI president Kalikesh Singh Deo stressed on the need for a framework that facilitates the transition of talented juniors into the senior set-up. “A majority of our shooters have emerged from the junior programme. Several have come through Khelo India, which the government runs. We’ve proposed that the NRAI work with an ecosystem to support junior shooters transitioning to the senior team,” Deo said on Monday. “This ensures junior shooters are exposed to our high-performance team, foreign and national coaches, and national shooters.” The NRAI believes that allowing the juniors to compete with seniors would increase competition faced by established shooters and in a playing field where technique is largely level, the best in-form shooters would consistently compete against each other. “Combining the junior and senior teams creates a unified approach. We appoint coaches for development and ensure juniors compete well with seniors. Previously, the junior programme helped juniors push …

Shooter Arjun Babuta cried at Karni Singh Shooting Range when he returned to practice after heartbreak at Paris Olympics | Sport-others News

On the first of October this year, the dim lights of the rifle range at the Karni Singh Shooting range lit up. A lone figure walked towards his lane, took out his rifle and made some adjustments to his weapon. It had been close to two months since he had touched that rifle. That extended period of distance was needed for Arjun Babuta after he finished in the dreaded fourth position at the Olympics. Eight shots was all Arjun Babuta could muster in his return to a shooting range after missing out on a medal by the barest of margins at the Chateauroux Shooting Range. The few hits fuelling the memory of how things went down for him in one of best debut campaigns of an Indian Olympic shooter – best by the standards of most but not him. It was around the eighth shot where the tears started to flow and the futility of a traumatic training session made him stop and walk away. “I never imagined that this 4th (place) thing would happen, …

Why a trimmed-down CWG 2026 could be lose-lose for India: No shooting, uncertainty over wrestling, hockey, cricket | Sport-others News

The good news for India’s athletes — like thousands across the Commonwealth — is that the troubled Games will be held in 2026. The not-so-good news for India’s athletes is it could feature very few sports where the country can contest for medals. The Commonwealth Games Federation and the organisers in Scotland, who rescued the Games by pitching a slimmed-down event, haven’t yet announced the sports that will be a part of the programme. The 2022 edition in Birmingham had 19 sports. The Glasgow organising team has said they will include just 10 sports in the 2026 Games. The CGF is hoping that 13 could be accommodated. Whichever way the decision goes, it could end up being a lose-lose scenario for India given that shooting is likely to remain excluded, wrestling is fighting for a spot while the axe hangs on other sports like hockey and cricket. At the 2022 CWG, India won 61 medals, including 22 of them gold. Wrestling (12), weightlifting (10), athletics (8), boxing and table tennis (7 each) contributed the most …
