Students of sealed seminary-cum-school hit streets, demand re-opening in Kashmir’s Shopian

Students and parents of the Siraj-ul-Uloom, which the administration closed under the provisions of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) last month, on Thursday (May 7, 2026) took to the streets and demanded its immediate reopening in south Kashmir’s Shopian. Hundreds of students, accompanied by parents, hit the streets in south Kashmir and marched towards the office of the Deputy Commissioner. “Most students are from poor families. What is the sin of the students? How can the administration mar their future?” said a parent. Shopian legislator Shabir Kullay also joined the protesters and demanded steps to ensure the students’ career is not affected. Over 800 students are enrolled at the seminary-cum-school. “Illegal activities should not be tolerated. However, the future of innocent students should not suffer. The closure of the institute is unfortunate,” said Mr. Kullay. He said the government should intervene to “ensure there was no academic loss for the students”. Officials said the district administration was mulling to have the students admitted to nearby schools. On April 28, the seminary-cum-school was sealed under provisions of …

J&K parties, orchardists hail Centre’s decision to shelve railway projects in Kashmir’s Anantnag, Shopian

The Centre’s decision to shelve the rail expansion projects, affecting orchards and residential areas in south Kashmir’s Anantnag and Shopian districts, was widely hailed by J&K’s political parties and orchardists on Tuesday (February 3, 2026). “The railway project was stopped after intervention of the J&K government to protect orchards and the local economy,” National Conference (NC) leader and legislator Tanvir Sadiq said.  Earlier in the day, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Anantnag-Pahalgam and the Anantnag-Shopian expansion was shelved for time being because of the concerns expressed by the leaders from J&K. Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the Centre’s move. “The decision to put the Pahalgam and Shopian railway lines on hold brings much needed relief to Kashmir’s agrarian economy. These projects threatened to destroy scarce fertile land and push over a million rural families into uncertainty. Development that uproots farmers is not progress,” Ms. Mufti said. The former J&K chief minister said any future plan must be reviewed transparently, with farmers and local communities taken on board, to protect …
