21 days later, Pune gets first widespread June showers; monsoon still to arrive

After a prolonged dry spell through most of June, Pune received its first widespread rainfall Sunday evening, bringing relief to residents from the warm and humid conditions. However, the showers were triggered by thunderstorm activity and the southwest monsoon is still to officially reach the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), NDA recorded the highest rainfall till 5.30 pm at 78.5 mm, while Shivajinagar received 18.3 mm. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), NDA recorded the highest rainfall till 5.30 pm at 78.5 mm, while Shivajinagar received 18.3 mm. Rainfall activity was reported from several areas including Baner, Warje, Hinjewadi, Katraj, Sinhagad Road, Shankarnagar and Kondhwa. IMD officials said that the rainfall should not be considered as the onset of the southwest monsoon over Pune. By 5.48 pm on June 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune’s main weather station, Shivajinagar, had recorded 18.30 mm of rain, and the grey clouds in the sky held out a promise of more. The highest rainfall recorded on Sunday was in NDA, which was drenched with 78.5 mm. Hadapsar received 8.5 mm, Pashan 4mm and Lavale experienced some relief, with 1.5 mm of rain, and Lohegaon received only around 0.6 mm. Chinchwad and a few other areas have to wait a while longer, as there was zero rain recorded here. According to the weather department, an atmospheric trough currently extends from East Vidarbha to Tamil Nadu, passing through Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The prevailing weather system is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu in the coming days. The RMC has issued a heavy rain warning for the districts of Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri on Saturday. These districts are likely to experience intense showers accompanied by gusty winds, officials said.
